  • Hitch rack for Argo Avenger

    Hi Guys

Anybody using a hitch rack? I've looked at some factory types, but can't decide on the length.
They range from 48 to 60 inches in length. I'm also considering designing my own, having the sides cut on an angle to align with the argo body. What do you think would be the best way to go?
Anybody with pics of factory or homemade racks on their argos?
    Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I have a hitch rack for my jeep that I am going to put on my Argo this deer season. It is the same width as the Argo so I was thinking of cutting it down a few inches to make sure that it doesn't catch on anything. The best part is that it goes back 12 inches from the hitch and has a lockable hinge so that it can be moved 90 degrees so that it is not dragging on everything and sticking out so far when you don't need it - kind of heavy though.

Does anyone know whether there is a weight limit posted for the hitch receiver on the Argo. I'd like to get a rack for mine, but was concerned about the stress on the receiver.

        hitch rack for argo

I don't know for sure about the argo, but most hitch weights are only 10% of rated trailer weights. So therefore if your argo is rated to pull a 1000 lb trailer, your hitch weight would be rated for 100 lbs.

You are refering to the tongue weight - same rule applies to vehicles. Anyone know for sure about the dead weight the hitch can safely carry without damage to the tub?

            Hi Guys,
I have a hitch rack installed on the back of my 97 conquest. It is not directly on the trailer hitch. I purchased a hitch rack from Princess Auto in Canada. I raised the placement of the rack to rest on the back hand rail across the back of the argo. The hitch connection would be way to low for the back of the argo. I fastened some channel iron to the bottom front rail so it sits down over the hand rail. I used rachet straps for a connection to the argo. The straps go around the botton of the rack including the hand rail. I cut the hitch tube to the width of the frame and left it there for strength. The hitch rail is held up by a bracket that angles down to the hitch. Two pieces of flat strap with a piece of 2x4 four fastened between. The flat strap has holes drilled it at the ends and this fits over the out side of the argo hitch and the hitch pin goes through and holds this in place. The trailer reciever is still usable. I did the same at the upper end with a pin through the hitch frame. I also have a plastic fish crate box that I use to put gear in and that is held in place with rachet straps through the drain slots in the bottom of the sides of the box and this holds the box to the rack and the rail at the back of the argo. The same straps can be used to fasten the rack to the argo as stated above. The rack is about 47'' long 19'' wide and a 5'' raised rail around 3 sides of the rack. The rack is narrower than the width of the argo. The only thing you have to watch out for is the argo is now longer and you have to watch turns on narrow trails. I hope this is clear. I will post pictures in the future. Paul
