  • do I have a hi-low range or just foward

I'm trying to figure out why my argo only goes about 6-8 mph its really slow. Its an early 80's model and it had a 17hp kohler and was converted to 4 sroke 16hp vanguard and upgraded the trans I think it was manual steering now its hydraulic it goes good lots of power and reverse and forward work but it only goes @ a walking speed well maybe a good jog. My local dealer said it sounds like I'm in low range but the shifter goes right into gear. Oh yeah, it also make a real loud whining sound @ full throttle and the dealer said that was normal as well. I just wanted to verify that. Thanks for any help.

my best guesses are that you are in low gear, engine is adjusted too far toward the tranny so belt is slack or one(or both) of the clutches is wrong

It should be reverse to the left, low in the middle and high to the right. Check to see if it goes further to the right with the panel out.

How tight should the belt be? its about 2-3 in. of play. The clutch on the engine is simalar to a snow machine and the back clutch is springloaded as the rpms go up the belt drops down in the clutch which seems to be working fine, I am a newbie and the machine was modified so its harder to diagnose any help is appreciated.

well, if the clutch weren't changed out when the engine was changed from 4 stroke to 2, it would engage late and would have a lower top speed.
