When I drive my newly aquired 44 hr 1997 Argo Conquest, there is a slight whining noise like the sound of a Pete Jackson gear drive in a Chevy 350. Is this normal? Just wanna make sure I have covered all the bases b4 I wear something out. I have greased and oiled everything that I can see.

A slight whining sound is not normal. You should have a screamingly loud whine! As argo in the infinite wisdom of their parent company ODG which is a gear and drive mfg, made the argo trans. Their excuse was the gears were stronger.. probably, but what a lame excuse. You'll get used to it, like my old harley, the noises and whines became music to my ears. Just don't drive a max, they are quiet and don't rob power in turns.
Congrats on the low hr conquest. It's a heavy duty workhorse. I have a '97 response. If you havn't changed the tranny fluid, I would. The first change will have a lot of shavings on the magnetic drain plug, then nothing from then on.To Invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. (Thomas Edison)

Kewl!!!!!!! I found older posts confirming. It is harmonious and not choppy. All points of play have been checked so I guess I'll have to run it awhile till I get those gears worn in. This thing is beautiful for being 13 years old. I was hesitant about an hr meter reading until I seen the machine myself. I was introduced to Argos about 20 years ago by a friend and kept telling myself I would buy one one day. Well one day came!!!!!!Last edited by sparkola; 03-16-2010, 02:10 PM.

ODG should be able to make a quiet gearbox.
They figured it out, after 3 or 4 decades. The avenger had a new trans with constant mesh gears and motor cycle like shift collars/ engagement lugs. You can even shift from high and low w/o coming to a complete stop.
I don't know enough about gear design other than to call them straight cut in the earlier trans designs, actually a mix of helical and straight, the constant mesh were helical but the ones that shifted were straight. There's some .pdf's on the 'net I can find for him if he wants. To Invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. (Thomas Edison)

Straight cut gears will whine, heli gears do not, as they're always in contact. Straight are not, hence the whine.Love that sound myself.
