  • Argo Recoil Starter???

I am new to the 6x6 world, and have recently purchased a 1998 Argo Vanguard, and a 1997 Max II. I am slowly learning about each machine, and this site has been extremely helpful. Thank You to everyone who posts here.

There is one question I cannot find an answer to; does anyone know if my argo is supposed to have a recoil starter? It does not have one currently. The electric starter works fine, but the other day I ran the battery dead, and wound up in a tight spot. If it is supposed to have one, where is the cord handle supposed to be mounted? I have the air scoop over it, and was not sure if the handle for the rope would sit on the outside, or if it may be possible to run it through the firewall.

I appreciate any help you can give me, and if anyone has a picture, I would really like to see it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Hello Chris, I know that Bigfoot with 18hp Brigg got some recoil starter but i don't think that Vanguard would come with one. If by any luck, you got one on your machine, it's gonna be located on the right side of the engine (when your sitting in) over the fan that cool the engine behind the black air intake... Hope it help..

Hey Chris, Ever thought of getting a larger battery? My sears has a tiny garden tractor size battery under the front seat. I had to use the winch one day and it sucked the thing dead in no time. I added a second full size battery in the rear next to the motor. I hope this gives me enough capacity for multiple winchings now.

If it doesn't have a re-coil, put one on. A lot of the engines have the option of adding one. Didn't come stock. Like my GX620 Honda 20hp did not have one. I can add it though. Same with the Briggs. Just find out what engine model you have and go and talk to a dealer. They will let you know what you need. My honda dealer had all the stuff in stock for me to add it.

I wold be surprised if argo sold a briggs varguard engine without a pull start. Pull the air duct off and see what's mounted on the engine cowling. There should be a slot in the rubber for the rope handle to stick through.

The only thing that was on the engine was the cup. I ordered a recoil starter from richard, and am going to install it in case of emergency, I was just wondering if anyone had installed one with a longer cord than came through the firewall, where you could start in from the driver's seat. This was just an idea that I had, and wondered if it may have been done already. This would come in handy especially when swimming. I know, don't shut it off, but you never know what may happen.

The cord will be long enough to run through the firewall if you wanted. However, even if you're floating, you could reach forward and unlatch the hood, un hinge it and set it in the back. Then reach down and pull the rope.
