Avenger Bearings

Hi There

I have an 07 avenger EFI with about 80 hours on it. I recently did the regular maintenance to it and notcied the one of the front axles has a very small(very small) wiggle to it. Now I assume this is a bearing issue, I greased the outer one as per usual and it seemed to help a little bit. I have yet to grease the inner one as I have been warned about "over greasing" these, should I try this? How serious is this? Not having done this how difficult are they to change and how do you determine which bearing is the cause, does only the outer one cause this wiggle?

Hi Mike, welcome to the site. Typically the outer bearings are the ones that go first simply because they take most of the abuse and outside elements. Since it sounds like the movement is really small I would just mentally note which axle it is and keep an eye on it. As long as it doesn't get worse you would be fine and not cause any damage to your machine. If it worsens then plan to replace it. It's not difficult to replace the bearings. The only thing that is really time consuming is when you have to fight to get an axle out but your Argo is so new that you shouldn't have much trouble. Post some pictures of your Avenger in the gallery if you have some.

I'm with Mike (Admin) on this. I would add that it's not possible to "Overgrease" Argo Axle Bearings- inner or outer the excess grease just squeezes out around the bearing retainer, or the seals.
Most of the time it's just the outer bearing that fails. If you really look at the bearings on the axle you will find that the inner is a "Heavier Duty" bearing.

This should help you out with the difficulty level thing:
Not an Avenger, and not a "Front", but you will get the idea. It's exactly the same procedure for your machine.

Thanks for that! That video is great! Although when I look at my front avenger axle, it looks like I may have to take contortionist lessons to get at it.
I was told that the inner bearings are sealed and "overgreasing" them can damage them......false????

Anyway, thanks for the video and input. What are the bearings and seals worth, do you have to get them from argo?

don't take this as gospel, but it seems like all pre hdi model have bearings with shields, and not true seals. The grease gets puhed out past the shields and flushes dirt and water. Just stay away from pressurized grease guns, and use a manual one and just hand pump at a slow or normal rate. Very seldom do inner bearings wear, I would have thought there would be equal thrust on both ends of the axle. All my inner bearings are 10 years old. I don't run tracks or carry a ton of cargo like Rock Doctor, however.

Hey Mike,
Just my opinion, but I don't believe you can "Overgrease" your inner axle bearings. In fact I would be suprised to see you actually get any grease into them at all. I've never had much luck doing it to mine Grease usually starts ooozing out around the bearing retainers long before I see any coming out the seals.
