Looking at replacing back 2 sets on my 8x8 argo. I got a price from a local supplier for 12.61/foot for browning double 50. I told him that I did not want the overseas stuff. Is this a fair price? How much would I need to do both back sets?

    (4) Morse Roller Chains - No. 40 & No. 50-2 - eBay (item 220647682382 end time Sep-01-10 16:32:31 PDT)

You can probably turn the #40 back on ebay for your shipping costs.

Which 8x8? If conquest then I can post a link to the parts manual - or I think I added text to one time I did post the links so it might come up in the search. The parts manual lists the lengths in links - So, if you have a conquest like mine, you'll need 10ft. In that case, buy the guys chain and mail me the box of 50-2 that you don't need.

Ask the seller to lay the chain that isn't boxed out flat and see if it measures EXACTLY 10ft. (center pin to center pin)

Thanks John,My machine is a 1990 magnum. I will talk to the guy tonight to see if he will sell just the 50-2. It will also keep the shipping down. Does this brand stretch bad?

If you are close to any Case International Harvester dealer/John Deere dealer tell them what you're looking for. I got 60ft. of 50-2 for just a couple of dollars per foot. Enough to do both my argos. Evidently, Case has a cotton picker that uses this chain too. Saved myself mega dollars by finding this.

Thanx a heap. I just ordered that 50-2 that John told me about, but for those prices I might just get enough to do it all.

Called the guy to see if it was on the way and he said he didn't send it because it was only 80". I got the money back. Going to try the john deere dealer to see what brand they are using like waylonh did. Maybe i am being to fussy on the quality? What do you think? Bought some used dirt dog tires yesterday 8 tires 22x11x8 great shape for $200 Hardley used.

Great price on the dirt dogs. They are tough tires and seem to have a bead guard built into them. I've never punctured mine. Will be interesting to see how your's swim. Mine are a taller 9" version.

Guys, when you're looking to re-chain your rigs, don't make the very costly mistake of only sticking to U.S. (Diamond) made chain. It's simply not true that the U.S. has the market cornered on high quality chain that meets or exceeds all ANSI specifications.

By "overseas stuff" if you mean China, I agree 100%. I would not buy any Chinese chain at this time. When this post I'm typing is three years old, it may be different, but as of now the quality control of steel in China is not consistent enough to meet the specifications for the stresses we put our chains through. Ditto chain from India, although TATA is producing some excellent steel in Jamshedpur. I do believe that Indian steel is starting to catch and surpass Chinese steel.

Consider this though. I just purchased 20' of DID (Daido Kogyo - Japan) 50-2 ANSI roller chain NEW for only $89 on eBay, and that included USPS Priority shipping to me here in Alaska. That works out to only $4.45 a foot, delivered to my door. Earlier, I purchased new HKK chain, also made in Japan, and am running it on my four rear wheels. I got that chain on eBay for only $1.80 a foot, and it's performing VERY well for me with NO stretch or breaks after a pretty brutal season.

Think about reliable automobile brands and Honda and Toyota come to mind. Both manufacturers source their chains from HKK and DID. Both DID and HKK have Japanese facilities that are ISO 9001:2000 certified. Daido Kogyo is also a big supplier of ANSI industrial chain to the petroleum industry, and those folks have pretty tight quality requirements.

To sum it up, there's no need to pay high dollar for chain. You don't have to pay more then $5 a foot for any chain. Just keep your eyes open on eBay, and use "50-2 chain" as your search criteria. This whole "off-shore chain is junk" idea simply isn't true. Keep an eye on Japanese brands, and a few plants in Taiwan (Allied Locke), and you'll have a superior chain and money in your pocket.

Oh...by the way...I re-chained my rig because my U.S. made Diamond chain was all stretched out of service. I'm a "buy American" kind of guy for nearly everything, but I can't justify pay 3 times as much for a product that didn't meet my expectations.
