    did over one hundred miles of trail near the canadian border without incident. the next week went chasing caribou near the yukon river and six miles down the trail i put my eighties argo in reverse and it made a ticking sound and then would not go into any gear. had to get towed out including across a few creeks. got very wet. why cant those old argos be made reliable. very sad. would have never expected that component to fail.

    well you are talking about a machine that is 20 to 30 years old and who knows how its been maintained since new... so having a tranny fail is definitely in the card for any vehicle that old... I would not blame the machine

      yup, the trani's are one of the weak spots on the old units, thay know they had a problem and that is why there was a multitude of parts changeups in the tranis from back then, when you go to rebuild that thingy you'll find out there was 4 or 5 internal gear change-ups and sometimes can be hard to get the right ones the first time ,unless you have the parts in-hand when you go to order them, and you'll find you'll probably have to buy alot more parts than just the ones you need due to the change-ups, or just buy a WHOLE new rebuilt unit

        Have it disassembled, it might be just shift linkage and not gear sets, since it didn't make terrible grinding noises.

          no terrible grinding. i can feel the gear shifter trying to engage the gears and finding them. but then it still does not go. i faintly remember it not going into gear after hitting reverse one other time before that and maybe a loud pop before that but i was on a rough trail so it is hard to be sure

            When you engage your tranny into reverse,take a look at the shifter shaft and make sure the lever doesn't have a lot of sloppyness to it. You will know when it's gears. Last fall while pulling trees those tiller bars made sure you knew that you ripped teeth off of a lot of gears in the diff. yours sounds like a mobility issue. Hope this helps.
