  • Help finding battery for Argo Magnum

I'm having trouble finding a battery for a 1990 Magnum 8x8. Battery tray measures 9 5/16" x 5 9/16". This has the Kohler 18 engine. Would a regular lawnmower type battery suffice? Was hoping to find a battery that would fit right in the original battery box frame without modifying.

I'm just getting started with this machine. I picked it up last fall for cheap $600. It has 308 hours on it. I'm not even actually sure of the year, the model # is v890-23. Bought it from a friend, was told it runs, just needs a battery, maybe a carb cleaning. a few of the chain tensioners are missing springs and a couple are missing the plastic rub blocks, not sure what you call those. I'd like to first find out the year and figure out somewhere to order parts. The battery is first on the list, like to see if it will fire up before anything. It's a cool machine, I've never owned one before, it's going to take some hard work though

A regular lawn mower battery will be fine. You can call or email the factory with the vin number and they can tell you what year it is. Search this site for more info on that. For $600 you really can't go wrong. Sounds like you got a great deal. You could part it out and get that money back easily.

My late '90's argo batery box is 9" by 5.5" inside. I can't tell you the group #, but it was a common size for older honda cars. The last battery I bought was from wal mart, a 520/430 CCA

I'll make a trip to walmart with my tape measure and see what they have. It seems like an oddball size, smaller than a regular car battery and bigger than a lawnmower one. I'll use the 520/430 specs as a guideline. I definitely appreciate the replies fellas

Look for a group 51 or 51r. The posts are probably reversed on them. I googled around and found this chart. Then googled some honda year models and it came up 51**. My walmart battery is a few years old.. I havn't seen them there lately however.

If you use the wrong battery you won't be able to use your winch properly so take your time finding the right battery. You don't want to have to buy two!

Hey that chart is great, that helps tremendously. Like you said , the 51 and 51R meet the size dimensions, I'll spend some time in the stores and find the right battery instead of spending money on something thats too small to run the winch or doesn't fit right.
