  • Argo Magnum External Alternator

Does anyone have an external alternator mounted to a Kohler Magnum 18 hp engine? I have installed an external alternator but the mount I have used is attached to the winch bracket and the top hood framing. I fear that under high winch loads, excessive force may be transmitted to the v-belt and possibly break it not to mention potential alternator bearing failures as well. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance................Don

Install a self adjusting idler pulley. Problem solved

Two problems: I don't have the space and the idler pullies I am aware of use a serpentine belt. Mine is a v-belt. Thanks for the suggestion though.

you could build your own. perhaps a chain adjuster from a dirt bike. they use a flat nylon wheel that could ride on the back side of a V-Belt

I now now what I am going to do and it is really quite simple; all I have to do is use a spring in the tensioning leg from the top of the alternator to the engine hood frame. When I do it in a couple of days, I'll post pictures if I can figure out how to post them.
