  • snow plow ? need your opinion's and help

Hope you guys can help me out , I can pick up one of those snowbear brand plows for free , they weigh about 230lbs with the pivoting frame they are just over 7' wide but easy enough to cut the sides off to shorten it up and lighten some weight off of it . Is this too heavy ? and now for the question that I'm sure has been asked before has anybody made thier own mounts or should I go with the factory ones and modify as needed ? I'v got an old machine , 1988 magnum with the 18 hp motor , I think it would have enough power to do the job.

I bought a cheap 60" plow for a quad and built my own mounts. I have a 1997 bigfoot with a 18hp and made two plates that bolt fully to the 2 front bearing extensions. Then built a subframe that bolts between the two plates and runs underneath all the way to the rear hitch, where it is mounted with the quick pin. The plow frame pivots off the subframe, and I just use the winch to raise and lower. It might be overkill but, I was concerned about mounting only to the extensions. I recently shortened my front bumper and have yet to shorten the plow attachment to bring the blade in a little closer. Kit adds a bit of weight to the front, but I actually like it that way, makes a turn very easy, sort of pivots on front 2 tires. Have not had a issue plowing straight but pushing very heavy weight snow at an angle it sort of dog tracks. I just end up taking smaller passes.

I think any blade designed for a truck or auto is going to be too heavy for a 6 wheeler, I did a similar application with a 60" atv blade on a cushman truckster. I think the new warn blade itself was about $165 delivered,

I bought a 60" plow for a quad and scrapped the factory carriage. Kept the pivot bar and made my own carriage and mounts for my t-boss. Paid about 20 bucks for materials and put about 8 hours labor into it. It is a quick connect setup with no tools needed. Plow and carriage together go about 150 lbs. And my blade is 18 inches tall. It works well, but I will advise that you make sure you have tires designed for good snow traction as (MY) terra terrains don't work so well. I got pics in my gallery if you can get there.
It's all just nuts and bolts.
