  • 12.5" Tracks on Mid-80's Argo I/C 8x8?

It's a long shot, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the 12.5" tracks on a mid-80's Argo I/C 8x8?

I'm looking at these, and am wondering if they are wide enough to be effective in muskegs and snow?

My rig is stripped down and is VERY lightweight, and I like the idea of not needing any extensions on axles or bearings.

    Thanks folks,

    Planter Bob

That's the same boat I'm in. My Argo is an 83, with the smaller tires and no axle extensions. $1300 is a lot of money for me though b/c I'm pretty much city bound :-( If you NEED it though it would be a pretty good deal (provided they work)

Planter Bob, I run the Argo version (13") on my mid 80's I/C 8 wheeler and they do everything well but swim. We had a lot of rain in Southern Manitoba this spring and I left the tracks on to get around my cattle farmer friends fields to check fence posts. They pull throgh muskeg, swamp, mud and 4 ft. of snow(claimed). Once the snowmobilers find out you have tracks you will be on pulling duty. They don't swim worth a crap or turn too easily on solid ground, but work well for what they are intended to do. Oh, expect a decrease in speed. Hope this helps.

Just the answer I've been looking for! I don't go swimming much at all, and if I do it's only very short distances.

Now I just have to decide on the Argo tracks or the Tru Trax from Richard. Are the Argo tracks rubber?

What does "I/C" mean when describing older Argos?

Don't be afraid to try 1/2 or 3/4 tracks as an option
3/4 Tracks (Front 3 tires on each side) works about 80% as good as full tracks
1/2 Tracks (Middle 2 tires on each side) works about 60% as good as full tracks

I've never tried the 1/2 Tracks, but have seen several machines done up this way (Usually in the summer time, when I prefer to run no tracks if possible)

                  Just a thought

                    RD,

I've been told by others that these models with roll pins do better with all or none for tracks. Could be just talk, but I want to go full tracks regardless. I have a lot of muskegs in the summer and snow in the winter.

So....Argo (Supertracks) or Tru Trax? Which would you go with? I can get the Argo tracks new for $1,850 and Tru Trax are $1,555 including shipping.

If I had $1,850 to spend on a set of tracks for an Argo, I,d buy the fast swimming tracks that Adair argo sells. These tracks have a 1 1/8" inch lug that provides outstanding traction in the mud, and a smooth upper surface to provide better side to side turning than any other track on the market.

Thanks for the suggestion, but at $2426 (with shipping) for the Adair tracks, that's nearly $1,000 more than the Tru Trax would run me! Swimming is low on my list for what I need. I want lightweight, good in snow (able to put on cleats), and relatively low cost. I think the Tru Trax are the best value going for new tracks. We'll see...I'm ordering them tomorrow, after two years of wanting tracks! Yeeeehaaaaa!

As far as roll pins go, if you think there not strong enough, do what i do, insert smaller roll pin inside original roll pin.

that is a good idea, the had a talk about some VERY strong shear pins on here recently available from graihger, I suppose I could try them, but I sure like not messing with my old argo since I put in grade 8s ( only broke one or two).
Planter Bob, me and you both. I am getting tracks to run around hunting. I can't wait for January. I have been trying to design my own. We will see if I make or buy. I think we can get away with plastic tracks in AK on light older rigs. Did you see my post on caging bearings. I know you are handy, if you have a forstner bit set, some pipe, and a chunk of UMHW off of ebay (1") I think they would work
