Used 2001 Argo Conquest came without winch. Dealer wants $1100 to install one. It is suggested we not go on the marsh without one. How hard is it to install, whats a good one and where is best place to get one. I live on Eastern Shore of MD.

Do you know what winch he quoted you? Perhaps a Warn? You can purchase a winch many places online depending on what you want. They are very easy to wire up (usually just two wires) and install. The only hard part would be fabricating the winch mount if you do not already have one. You may be able to still purchase one direct from Argo if you would rather just bolt one on instead of doing any metal work. If you go that route you will probably just have to drill a few holes in the body for bolts and perhaps the frame? I do not know how the factory winch mount on a Conquest attaches.
Call Argo and see what a winch mount would cost you if they are still available. Then price the winch and see if it is worth the difference to you to get the dealer to install it but don't be afraid to do it yourself.

Your dealer sounds more like the classic "stealer-dealer" to me. $1100 for a winch installed!?! He must be smoking crack! I will admit that a good winch can make an our already awesome amphibious ATVs practically unstoppable. They really give you the confidence to try just about anything without fear of being stuck. Earlier this past summer I bought a really nice 2500lb. winch on ebay for a great price. Here's a slightly heavier version of the unit I got:
3000LB PROMARK ATV Winch 3000 LB Synthetic PKG MQ: eBay Motors (item 200519841785 end time Oct-14-10 19:47:16 PDT)
The unit I bought came with a generic L-shaped steel mounting plate (1/4" thick!). The winch itself is very heavy-duty and even came with a 50ft. synthetic rope, which I am told is much safer in the event of breaking - it won't come flying back at you like a steel cable can. The brand has a solid reputation and the ebay dealer has an excellent word-of-mouth from buyers. Anyhow... it's hard to go wrong for $150. Installation should be pretty simple and straightforward, but I cannot say for certain since my rig is a Max IV which has the motor in the rear, which made it super easy to mount the winch up front; I just had to drop the fuel tank and drill a few holes, bolt everything together, re-install the gas tank and it was done. Your Argo may be more of a pain with the motor up front, but when you're saving almost $1000 you can deal with a little frustration a lot easier. LOL!
Good luck, whatever you buy.

DirtyHarry, nice find! I saved it to my watch list. Looks like a viable option for WHEN my nice HF unit craps out. Heck, I paid $60 for a warn brand thumb switch alone (no laughing anyone, it was new in box) and this deal includes one. Joe.sigpic
