  • Slow Argo

I have a 1980 Argo 8x8 HD, and am wondering are they all this slow? I used my GPS and it says my top speed on a straight road is 12km. A little help please.

    Thanks, Westy

That's SLOW. I thought mine was the slowest one around, but it still does about 20-23 kmh.

Without more info, it's impossible to tell what is out of whack for sure. I'll jump in and start with CLUTCHES. If it's an '80 then you will probably need to service them, and possibly need to replace them.
How many hours on the machine?
    How does the engine run/sound?
Have you cleaned the carb, changed the fuel filter, ect?

If RD's jumping in with CLUTCH, I'll put in my bid for CARB. I would absolutely check the high mixture on the carburetor. If that's out of whack, you'll lose quite a bit of top end performance. Be sure to check the float height before you go through the mixture adjustment.

old HD's use the 16hp Tejunksie, so yes i would guess engine problems, salsbury clutches that came on those are usually hassle free but might be a problem, however it could be a dragging brake or a bad bearing or two or many things?? need more info to help

This looks fun, I'm going to piggyback off of Rock Doctor and guess that you need to tighten or replace the belt.

It could possible be the carb because I just replaced it and never adjusted it. the really sure what to adjust the idle speed is a little high, this i know because I have to wait for the right time to put it in gear. I will mess with it and hopefully gain some speed. Thanks Westy

Here's a post I made describing the mixture adjustment on the carburetor on my Kohler KT17. You have a different engine, but once you've identified the high and low mixture screws on your carburetor, the steps are the same.
