  • Argo engine swap

Here are some pictures of a 1980 argo getting a Honda 20 hp v-twin. Complete
with new clutches. This setup killed the old transmission after about 40 hours
-right in middle of moose hunting- Luckily I was able to drive out with no reverse
or low. Since then she got a brand new tranny to.

Nice! That motor looks really good sitting in your Argo.

Hey Nody, nice and clean installation. Have you put the top body back on yet? I have a 6x6 1981 that I installed a B&S 16 HP V twin into and had to modify the top section a bit to clear the rocker covers. Was wondering if the Honda was abetter fit.
Cheers and have a Happy New Year with the new engine.

Thanks Swamper, these pics are from last year, and yes the Honda fits pretty tight, luckily all I had to do was swap around the rocker covers, because the front one had the oil fill cap.
Also as you probably know the idler chains on this model/year are tightened by moving the power pack forward, which makes it even worse as the chains wear. My buddy put a Honda
in an 86 and his chains tighten by piviting the powerpack up at the back. For all the drawbacks I sure like the power. How did the B&S work out for you?
        Happy New Year

Yup, picture no. 4 indicates it was at least a 7-8 Labatts 12 pack job. Possibly more since they are stacked pyramid style. Nice job

The B&S works great, other than the mod to the hull. Love the power of the V Twin over the single cyl Tech that was in it. Still have to get a hood made for it to keep the twigs and stuff out of the engine bay. Yea I had to cut a little bit more the other day to get the front rocker cover off because I had tightened the idler chains. I think the decompression device stuck on my engine because I bent both intake pushrods about 2 weeks ago when I fired her up to clear snow out of the driveway. Oh well such things happen, and it is a pretty easy fix.
              Cheers

I'm in the process of putting a Honda 20 hp in a 1974 argo 8x8 but no engine clutch or trans clutch when I got the argo. Can you tell me what primary and secondary you used. Thanks

You guys may want to try snap-idle adjusters for this application.
