  • Old Argo Axles

Hi guys, I'm taking apart an old argo & I've gotten 3 axles out...The thing that has me puzzled is that the shafts are brass colored where the bearings are contacting the shafts this is a pretty old machine...could it be that the bearings got spun & damaged shafts & then removed & brazed? Or is this discoloration a normal occurrence? Thanks.

I guess that is a possibility Tom. Could you post some pics so we could see it. This would be an inexpensive fix for the problem you mentioned, but it is strange that all 3 would have the same color though.

I'll try reading on posting pics & see what I can do if I don't have to work tomorrow...

I have repaired shafts on farm machinery by filling the worn area where a bearing has turned on the shaft by brazing then filing or machining the area smooth. That's my guess on what you have. Not a long term fix, but it works for a while.

Yeah...I'm pretty sure that's what happened...it had me puzzled at first though because it's not something I'd do.

ETA...I'll still post some pics when I get time...thanks.
