I have have been trying out this 2001 conquest I bought a few days ago. It is my first experience with Argos. I tried going up a steep hill that the machine couldn't climb. I noticed that the tracks behaved like a car with a standard differential. When one track started slipping the other would stop turning. I would lightly touch the brake on the left side and then I would get power to the right track. If I used a very light touch I could get both to turn. Is this normal for this machine? I expected it to behave like a positrack differential in a car. Thanks

This is normal, Your Trans is really nothing more than an "Open Diff" design. Feathering the brakes is a bit of an art, but once you get the hang of it, it just comes natural, and you will do it without thinking about it.
It's only really noticable when one side really has no traction and the other has good traction.

Thanks for the info. While waiting at the parts counter in my local Argo dealership, I inspected a new 2011 Avenger. I was told starting with the the 2010 model the Avenger has the transmission I wish I had. Separate forward/reverse drive to each side. No brakes required unless you need to stop.

That statement is misleading. If you will search the site for the admiral or HDI transmission you will see a few posts with some detailed information on how it works. It does allow for some counter-rotation in low gear but the wheels going backwards do so at a very slow speed. You can not control either side separately. Here is a good thread on the transmission and what it can / can not do: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/argo-...eel-drive.html
