  • Homemade rear cargo rack

Just thought I would post a few pics of my latest project for my Avenger. I don't like having the rear floor area all cluttered up so I thought a rear rack would be nice. I built it so that it is 2 pieces, the left side is the main side and has the bumper mount welded to it. The right side is removeable with 4 wingnuts so that I can run an outboard motor, the fuel tank would then go on the left side rack, keeping the rear floor clean. I thought it would be a lot more comfortable for anyone in the back.

I still have to build a railing to keep stuff in and tie down to and give it a coat of paint but it is close to done here. It is made out of lightweight angle iron I sourced from Yamaha ATV's and outboard crates from the local dealer, normally it is just garbage so it was free.

Yeah, I also wanted somewhere to carry an ice auger, they dont fit inside the cab too well with 2 people and FORGET it with more than 2. Now I can just strap it to the back with the rods.

Rack now has a railing, I decided to try using chain, seems to be okay so far, it's a lot of welding though. Probably should have used the stick welder instead of the mig, would have been faster, but oh well it worked with the mig too.
Heres some pics, sorry for the poor quality (blurry) but it's my cell phone as I didn't think to bring the good camera.

i'm making something similar, can you post a few more close up pictures of where it mounts to your hitch.

What angle did you cut the bar coming from the hitch to the bottom of the basket?
