  • Oil Bath Chains

Talked to a fellow up here in northern Ontario who has an 8 wheeler conquest and is crippled. This is his sole machine for hunting and ice fishing so it gets all year use.
He never floats in water any longer than absolutely necessary as he feels the machine will do it but it is only a matter of time before it inhales some water.
This guy pours 3 or 4 quarts of oil in the floor of the machine so the chains are pulling through it all the time.
He has never replaced a bearing ,chain, or seal ever!
    Any thoughts????

The situations I find myself in, the oil would pour out the front, back, and \or sides of the machine along with coating the floor boards, seats and myself with oil. I guess if you keep it slow and level it would work. Who wants to ride like that?

A lot of good information regarding high strength chains and quality chain lubes can be found on the various motorcycle forums. The Hayabusa that I owned in a former life had an O-ring type chain that reduced the required frequency of lubrication. I never found a chain lube that would stay on at 200 mph though

I have been a true believer in oil bath systems for chains in any application for about 30 yrs and have been trying to come up with one for Maxs and Argos but the trani and floorpan needs to be re-designed in both cases to make a TRUE oil bath system, I have designed the trani now but getting it made is where i'm at now, also the outer brgs and seals are to be redesigned with more reliable seals and brg protection. In both cases the tub has been redesigned for better clearence and more suited to oil bath. The shaft drive system that I designed (and built) is simply too expensive for the average user unless I get them made overseas. The twin sealed outer brg system (for units with tracks) is being prototyped right now and is being made to accept the limited travel suspension system that I designed and posted on another thread. After all is said-and-done the most probable end result will be a completely redesigned tub, frame and trani, new style outer brgs with a suspension system that people will simply pull all their components off of their machine and put onto this one.
He who has not cruised the back country in a 6x6 , has not lived life to it's fullest
A Mans level of mechanical education directly corresponds to the level pain suffered while getting it
