  • cargo area measurement

i am not sure if i am trying to talk myself out of buying a 8x8, or talking my self into buying a 6x6.

what is the actual measurement difference?

i know my dogs would like the extra space, but i could fit the little ****s in the back of a 6x6.

i have found 6x6's in my area but 8x8's seem to be like hens-teeth

after 3 months of shopping i am getting pretty jumpy (never a good thing)

Madmac, I don't know dimensions, but being very familiar with both, there's a lot more rear cargo room in the 8x8 -- a lot. With the exception of kids and a toolbox, rear cargo on a 6x6 is limited (I can't really see a dog being too comfortable, either). However, the 8x8 give true seating and cargo room. With that said, the 8x8 is a much larger machine, not as sporty and agile as the 6x6. Also, as we've learned, if you're looking at 6x6s, look at the 650 HD range -- the smaller motors on 480s and 580s just aren't what they should be, we're told. Best wishes.

thats a good point, the names get a little confusing. (does the 480/580 relate to cc's?)

what is the hp range that come factory in 6x6's?

obviously the most hp is the best choice, but what would be the recommended minimum?

The 480/580/650 do relate to cc's, but more aptly, 14hp/18hp/23hp. The 480 is no longer made, and the 580, again, is said to have motor issues out of the box. Also, what's really important to know is that moving up to the 6x6 650 gives you the Admiral steering -- a huge improvement in handling, traction, manuverability, and safety. The 6x6 650 is notably more expensive than the 580, but the 650 is a huge step-up in technology.

For the Cargo area, just look on Argo's website at their brochure: http://argoatv.com/_uploads/recreati...ious_UTVv2.pdf

Starting at page 8, they show the dimensions of every model they have.

I assume you are looking for a used amphib. The best model for you depends on how much you want to spend, but the 8x8 models seem to be what everyone wants (that's why you are having a hard time finding one). The Avenger 8x8 came out in 2004 with the 25hp Kohler, carbureted engine. That was the first model that really changed the Argo line up with an all new body and transmission. The engine quickly changed to the 26hp Kohler which was basically the same, but in 2007 it got the 31hp Kohler EFI. 2007 was also the first year for the Frontier 6x6 23hp and 2008 was the Frontier 8x8 23hp. Argo offered the 6x6 in a 14hp and 18hp version for a lower price point, but the 23hp (650) had more standard features and is easily worth the extra cash. I believe 2006 was the last year for most "old" body style Argos such as the Vangaurd, Conquest, and Response. Those models are good quality machines but performance is considerably less than the Frontier and Avenger. The new models starting with the 2004 Avenger have a better transmission (and an excellent trans in 2010 with the Admiral), better lower body design for mud/snow, better tires, and improved speed and accelleration.

I have a Argo 6x6 Bigfoot, and wanted more storage area, but not for animals. I built myself a plywood deck that sits directly on the rear seats, to spread out the weight distribution better, that was framed with angle iron braces that fit between the seat cushions and body tub, both in front and rear. Between these, two more pcs. of angle iron rests fitted up against to "open" sides of the rear seats. In the middle is a hinged "hatch" piece, so that I can still get into, the rear bottom tub section. Pics are located in my albums.
I then wanted even more storage space, so I built a raised cargo basket that is full width of the machine. Again, pics are located in my albums.

It's just amazing at all the kinds of modifications that one can do to these types of machines.

If I ever have another dog, he/she could run beside the vehicle, since they are fairly slow, and jump in, for water travel.
