  • 2011 Argo Frontier modifications

Ever since I,ve owned my 2011 Argo Frontier I,ve noticed that it retains a lot of heat underneath the hood. When enough heat builds up underneath the hood , the heat then begins to radiate out from the plastic panel thats right below the handle bars. You then start feeling the heat against your legs. The muffler on my 2011 Frontier is a lot quiter than my friends 2008 Frontier muffler. I knew that the quieter muffler was a lot more restrictive ,and this probably had a lot to do with the heat that I was experiecing with my new machine. When driving the Max IV or the Mudd-Ox I never experienced heat like this because the engines were behind you.

I opened up the top of my factory muffler and was amazed just how restrictive it was, and also why the exhaust note was so much quieter than my friends 2008 ,Argo factory muffler. I have since installed a new muffler off of a 2008 Argo Frontier. I also bought an aluminum mounting plate and K&N cone shaped air filter from Performance V-Twins. I mounted the billet aluminum ,air cleaner mounting plate on top of my stock carburetor. The next thing that I did was use different cut sections of truck radiator hose ( part numbers 7820 and 8581 from NAPA auto parts ) ,cut off pieces of steel exhaust tube ,and stainless steel hose clamps to piece them all together. When I had configured the different radiator hose pieces together, I then attached one end to the billet mounting plate, and with the cut pieces that I had left over , I routed the K&N air filter in between the head light and cool air vent thats opposite the muffler. For my initial first test I let the engine run at idle for an hour with the hood on. When I opened the hood I expected to feel a blast of hot air rising and hitting me in the face, but the engine bay was a least 50% cooler after I,d made these modifications. The engine now runs cooler with the hood on, and the exhaust note now has a deeper and stronger tone.

You should have told me, I would have traded you mine. Didn't realise the newer ones were quieter. That's one of my complaints about my 2007 Frontier, I find it loud and have to wear hear plugs.

I would have made that trade, but here is the problem. I can install a muffler like yours on my 2011 Argo Frontier, but you can,t install the quieter muffler off of mine. The reason being, is that the muffler is larger in width and length than your 2007 muffler. I was told this by my Argo dealer.

This is a video of the recent modifications that I,ve done to my 2011 Argo Frontier. I tried to get a shot of the K&N cone shaped air filter that I positioned between the front head light and the cool air vent, but it was too dark to see it.

Man, I tip my hat to you. That looks like a sharp set up. Cold air intake for an Argo, very ingenious! I watched this twice with the volume way up, nice rumble.
I'd like to see Argo make some changes for us people in the hot weather parts of the world. At least they need a hood that lets the hot ait out and more cool air in, instead of the fully sealed units currently made.

The dynamic I've noticed on my 2011 Frontier is that it's loud when you're in it, but surprisingly quiet from a distance. I've been driving mine, thinking it was loud, and yesterday I watched as my brother took it for a spin, and I was astounded how quiet it was. I can hear quads coming a mile away, but I was watching him from a few hundred feet away, and could barely hear the Argo. I suspect the tub traps the sound around the driver like a speaker, but from the outside it's astoundingly quiet. Quads ride the same trails I do, and my neighbors and I constantly hear them, so I was pleased to realize yesterday that my neighbors can't hear me (especially since I like night rides).

Nice job on the cold air intake mudbug. It really seems to work well on my big block conversion also. It certainly does improve engine performance and helps keep engine temp a lot lower than recycling hot air.....pcmark..night rides are a blast and even if its not very far it can seem like quite a fun adventure...my kids and i also like riding in the really tall grass behind our house...kinda neat

              Havin fun!

                Obsessed

I got this idea from you. When you brought your big block Argo Frontier to river run atv park I was really impressed at how much cooler your engine ran than mine did when our engines both got hot. When I saw the intake set up that you had made , and how well it worked , thats when I decided to do this to my Argo Frontier.

mudbug3....the newest version of the bigblock industrial motor that were using this year has several special modifications including a new style high flow air intake cooling fan and by adding the factory brake cooling fan assembly we are attempting to drive more fresh air into the engine compartment to improve cooling even more...im anxious to see how these new machines perform in this summers heat...

                  Keep it cooool!!!

I am probably going to do this same modification. The heat got bad yesterday, and I was hoping that there was an alternative to fabricating hood vents.
