  • 1970`s Belt size

I am trying to find out what size belt to run on my 1979 argo. I have replaced the engine with a Kohler 20 hp Command. In doing this I had to move the mounts back about and inch. Nothing else has been chenged. My Argo did not come with a belt so Im just looking for a starting point. I have searched the other posts with very little luck

My question is what size belts are people running on these older 70`s machines?

Since you have the engine in a location further back than stock, you will probably just have to measure the distance and go from there. There are a couple of great threads on how to do this in the transmission forum if you decide to go that route.

I have gone through them found that a 38 3/8 V belt works great so I was going off of that measurement, after purchasing what I thought was the correct belt and latter finding out it was not correct. I have decided to start over and figured if the same model is running a 52 inch belt I would know at least ball park of what I need.

I bought 5 wrong belts having this same issue. My 70's argo has a 10.8 inch driven clutch. I changed the kohler engine for a kawasaki. The belt was a gates 6097= 1 1/4 x 48 7/8 but they don't make that belt anymore. I too had to move my motor 1 inch. I finaly got a 1 1/4x 47 7/8 & it's a 1107 snowmobile belt. I posted some of my pics in the gallery under jasonK & you can see the different belts. The newest pics show a 9 inch driven clutch with the belt #'s on it. If you need any more info on anything i said PM me 7 i'll try to help. JasonK in scranton Pa.
