  • Oil changin

Well I took my argo in for a quick tune up/oil change and figured while it was there they could check my tracks, as I was taking the unit out moose hunting in northern Alberta.. When I picked it up, I have determined I will be doing my own service on it from now on.. I'm not sure what the turning point was, but I do know that the $100 wash bill for it, after it was in my garage and clean was the icing on the cake...I was told it was for an "interior washing of the tub before they could grease it"... It wasn't spotless, but it wasn't packed with 2" of grease either!!

It is an '07 Avenger.. Any tips or things people have learned in the process would be a gret help!!

Sorry to hear that about the $100 wash bill. That doesn't seem like a good way to treat a customer. They should have done no more than you authorized them to do. If they thought they needed to wash it in order to grease it then they should have told you that up front. Like you said, if there was a ton of crap in the tub then I could see them needing to do that but otherwise it doesn't seem necessary.

Doing your own servicing is rewarding if you have the time and patience and it's usually pretty straightforward. If you happen to get stuck on anything, there are plenty of knowledgeable Argo guys here on the site that can help you out.

I'll definately be consulting this board if I do run into any snags!!

I did some digging and found my last service bill from the other dealer in the area from Sept 09 and noticed some changes to the Sept 11 prices..
      Then:
      $13 - Oil Filter
      $64 - Oil Change Kit - I can't remember if I had bought a spare or not
      $20 - Shop supplies
Labour - 1 hour at $99 per hour

      Now:
      $13 - Gear Oil
      $15 - Oil
      $15 - Oil Filter
$29 - Chain Grease (I know I can buy a whole can for $19 and it does alot more than one service)
      "Service A" - $225 Labour
      $110 - Wash
      $25 - Shop Supplies
$90 - 1 hour to check the tracks

I'm defiantely going to try to do some of my own work on it, but I am thinkin if I need to I'll make the extra 2.5 hour drive to the other dealer (where I bought the machine)... I'm not sure I see the value in being closer and paying an additional arm and a leg...

hi, you can change your own oil by using a gas jug and shopvac....where your dip stick comes out you can put a hose that fits the hole snug, take the other end of this hose and put it in the smalll hole in the gas can, drill small hole bigger, now take the shopvac hose and put it in the big hole of the gas can, turn shopvac on and suck the oil out,the dirty oil goes into your gas can....

I second Bucky's oil change idea, I finally tried it this year and it was awesome! I took my unused $100 pumpvac back. Just be sure to warm the engine a bit to make the oil pass faster. I enjoy doing my own maint and found it gives me confidence when out in the bush, it's nice to know how to fix stuff in the shop before you have to do it on a log or in the muskeg. This site is full of good guys with lots of experience and that are willing to help out. Good luck
