  • 1970 argo

I am rebuilding a 1970 argo 6x6. Do these machines have chain tensioners? Mine doesn't seem to have had any. Also, I've read ALL of the wheel and tire posts and I'm still mot sure what to run. I know I have to upgrade to 22's but there are too many options. Bead locks? rawhide iii"s or older rawhides? I want it to swim well but I figure I need softer tires due to my small axles. I need help!!!

Nice to meet you yes they should, but only for the back two axels. The front dosent seem to have one near as i can figure. I have been down this road, and if you look on the inside of your frame, there are two slotted holes with maybe a washer above, this is wherere the tensioners went. They arnt atomaticly adjusting, and you cant buy parts. I am going to replace mine with some of these, rember you only need four and can mount them on the original places, just make it so it is pushing on the bottom.

    good luck! (click link above)

Those are cool, I might have to get one just to keep in the parts box as a "spare", just in case I rip another tensioner out of my Conquest.

      Thanks for posting

Thanks for the info. I should be able to whip up something like that fairly easily. I'm trying to get some pictures up here. Stay tuned

I have 2 1970 argo's 1 i ride & the other i used for parts. Neither one of them have any chain adjusters at all. There are no slots in the frame for adjusters. I seen you said they would be for the rear wheel chains but mine operates fine with no issues without them???? Just my 2 cents. JasonK from Pa.

chain adjusters predomently keep the "viberation" out of the chain and sprockets. They largely keep the system from premature wear of sprockets and chains. Wish you were here so i could take you for a ride. it also cuts down on noise

I added extra chain tensioners to my scrambler.Just buy yourself a pair of roller skates and bingo you have 8 wheels to use as chain tensioners!I paid 2$ for my skates at a garage sale.Remember I am not talking roller blades but roller skates.

The 70 6x6 argo i have has a neopreme type plastic slider guides only. I'm quessing argo started using "slack adjusters" as an upgrade as they didn't master the design on there first build.
