I am in the process of removing all of my roller pins and switching to bolts. One of my front pins made it half way out and will not move. I tried drilling it out thats like trying to drive a rubber nail into concret its not really working out. Tryed a drift pin all that happens is my arm gets a work out. Tryed taping it from the other side using a brass rod all what happened was it mushroomed. can anyone add some thoughts.

PB Blaster that thing, let it set for a day, and then try again after hitting NEAR the pin with some good wacks to free it up a bit. I also will tell you, there is a drift, and then there is a DRIFT. A very large drift necked down to 5/16 is handy, about 10 inches long or so, you can really nail that thing with a 3 pound maul or biggerLast edited by MIteyMT; 10-18-2011, 03:34 PM.

Ok I got all the roll pins out it was not so fun. My new issue question is the front axels are all rusted and pitted do I have a prayer of removing them. I can not cut them as I need save the old ones. If no one has any ideas can someone give me dimensions of the two front axels of what I beleive is a late 1970`s argo. I will try and get a picture of the axel up soon.

the problem wit the roll pins is that when you beat on them, the end you are beating on mushrooms out, so even if it starts moving it hangs up half way through
step one:
PB blaster
step two, put on safety glasses and beat it untill it moves.
step three, more pb blaster and go for the other side (turn the axel 180 degrees)
use a grinder and grind it off flush with the hole.
Get the 5/16 drift, NOT A PUNCH YET clamp it with vise grips (so if you miss it hits the vice grips and not your hand) and just get it to start moving, beating the drift into the hole so it locks up is bad news.
HIT IT as hard as you can... Pretend im standing there telling you to hit it with your purse and insulting you, it is ok to get MAD and really SMACK IT
if it wont move GET A BIGGER HAMMER. i used my splittin maul
now that you have it moving again use your really nice 40 dollar 5/16 punch that will never leave the argo.
i had one hang up half way out, it is because i mushroomed the head on it and drove it in. This is were life sucks. Since the pin is 5/16 i got a carbide bit for a die ginder that was 1/4 inch and put it in the drill. It cut enough material out of it that i could get it to move again.
i also took a chunk of solid steel (long solid tie rod) probbably about 3 feet long, cut bolth ends off and drilled a 5/16 hole in one end, and put a piece of 5/16 punch in it (i broke a few of those) and THAT will move some stuff, no more worring about hitting a clutch or sproket or chain....
just MAKE SURE you are not flaring the end you are hamering on by beating on it and then driving that into the hole... bad news.
good luck, and as any argo owner will tell you, it is a right of passage.Alaska floating atvs group on face book. Fixing help and trail rides!!!!!

I used a oxy/actelyne torch to heat the hubs up to cherry red while pulling on them with a 3 jaw puller. I stretched them so they are useless now. If the enginge rune, drive it with the pins out until the hubs break free. I could not do this because the engine was siezed. Once I got the hubs off, I pulled the axles out and and used a grinder with a cut off wheel and cut the bearings almost all the way through. Them hit the inner race with a cold chisel and large hammer to break them off. Hope this helps

I was able to get all the axels out I had to cut one because the pin is stuck pritty good tryed taping it out from both ends tryed drilling it with a carbide bit went through 3 of them they keep shatering on me. So I have it at a point where it will not move no matter how much I beat on it. Any have any sugestions
Nevermind I got it out I ended up using my last carbide bit drilling out what I could then just got angry and starting what was left of the shaft took some time but its out.
