  • Polaris winch

I was working on RDs winch cover today, and I got curious, and took a look on ebay. My buddy back in America had told me my winch on my red argo did not have a brake on it and it was dangerous. I don't know what the deal is, but it sounded like a good enough reason to buy a winch. I went on ebay and purchased a warn 3000, it said it was a gen 6 polaris. I suppose that means the bracket bolts to a polaris, and I figured I could easily overcome that. I don't know what gen six has to offer. Anyway, it's all got me wondering, because it's new, and it's from a good seller, but I bought it about 200 or more cheaper than every other winch on ebay. Whatever the situation may be, it's on it's way

it is this exact product 3.0ci Polaris Warn™ Winch Kit from Polaris ATV Accessories & Apparel 2006

    Can't wait to see it

I don't know a lot about the different winches available out there, but I do know that the older, smaller Warn Winches never used to have a brake in them. I remember a number of times when I winched quads (mine or others) up for whatever reason, (ex mounting Snow Plow). they would slowly lower themselves back down if they were not also strapped up. Also remember trying to winch machines up very steep inclines and having them spool themselves back down if the winch button was released. Have never had that issue with my Rule Winches.
On a different note, I have to say that I am liking the lower powered winches better than the bigger ones. That 3000lb winch you just purchased will probably wind the line in 2 or 3 times faster than my 4200lb ones, and if you need more power, pulley blocks are always an option.

good place for that old winch could be on the front of a certian orange trailer? No need to wire it up, just use jumper cables and a battery

Ya, Shannon said you were pretty handy with that. I was actually looking at a 5k winch and wondering how big was too big. Having some speed on a winch is nice, but I think most of us agree, as long as it is moving, we are happy

Best mod you can make for that winch is to see if you can get a synthetic rope and the propper fair lead (lighter = less stuck). Keep the old cable around, maybe a custom mount up on the cab for a shovel, lights, and the cable? You never know how much you might need an extra 50 feet. also, i think it is getting time to put our heads together and build a pull-pall.. especialy if it also will function as a mattoc and a shovel :^) after november 15 its as good as any to try out my welder. With the 5K winch, if the argo didnt come unstuck, it would come apart.... maybe good idea, maybe bad?

After i thought about it, that 5K is ONLY on the last wrap. If you look at the by wrap specs, the first wrap is significantly less.... like only 3000 or 3500 LBS pulling power

I don't think you need that pull pall. I have a couple pieces of 24" rebar, you just weave them into the brush, and hook to them, good little "tundra anchor" you can even drive one if you need too. I think you are on the right track with the rating on your superwinch, but I need to learn more about the new soft cable, it scares me, but I don't know why

I like the new "Soft Cable" idea, several guys here have them on their winch's. The only issue I have heard from them is that if you get them wet in the winter, they freeze solid and can not be spooled off the drum. I think that with a little care and attention this would not be an issue, especially with a good winch cover.

the older ones were not so hot. They had poor abrasion resistance, and would start to cut if around a sharp edge, such as a rock. In all honesty, they have become stronger and lighter than the cable they replace. Plus, if you have really ever cut your hand on a cabel, they can be nasty sharp. I would love to have one. They pioneered the technology in rock buggie racing, and if you have ever seen those guys go at it, you know it has to be TOUGH
