  • wear grove in axle's

Just removed most of my axles (87 I/C 8x8). I see a slight wear grove where the seals were toughing the axles. How much grove is too much? Right now it looks like the paint is just wore off.

Thats not terrible my old 88 IC had 1400 hrs and the grooves were deep,I assume that the 87 had twin seal outer hub as my 88 did keep it greased especially if you are in water alot I did not have a issue grease repels water as good as a seal.NCT

Sounds like yours are not to bad yet. Im not sure how much is to much but I have heard of them getting bad enough to leak. Ive read about people having them welded and turned back down to spec. on a lathe. You could probably have them welded with some stronger rod that would be less likely to wear I assume. Im not sure how much that would cost vs a new axle but it dont sound like your to that point yet. I would keep them greased and not worry about it until they do.

Thanks for the info. I got 400 hrs on the meter. I read about using jb weld then sand down to size. but the groves would have to be pretty deep.

We used to pack some seals on the farm with string. Greased string in that groove in reassembly might last longer than you think

i just did the jb weld trick on two of my axles. they sounds like a similar amount of damage. make sure the area is clean and let the jb weld set completely. i sanded and the stuff stayed in place. i painted and reassembled. also you can swap axle positions if that helps, i moved them to the front with the big bearing extensions so won't be getting wear on the same spot on the axle.

At 400 hrs that machine is just a pup,on my IC I did replace some axles but that was well beyond the 2000 hr mark, but if I had of known of this JB weld I might have been able to save them.
