Hey !!
I have aquired an Argo 8x8. My problem is that i'm not at all familiar with them and this one needs full restoration. It has no engine. I dont even know the model. i have included the only ID plate i could find in the image and also the stamped ID number from the transmission.
If anyone could take a minute to help on the Argo model or age and the trans. type etc it would be a great help. ( im totally green )

Hi gypsey, welcome to the site. To ID your Argo, you can call Ontario Drive and Gear with your serial number and they should be able to tell you exactly what year it is and perhaps what motor it came with. http://www.argoatv.com

I will try and find some time tomorrow to dig thru my archives but it looks like a late seventy,s early eightys machine where are you located.H transmission fairly common with the single cylinder Tecumseh engines of the early and mid eighty's,at that time Argo had switched from the fun 2 Stroke to the lame lawnmower powered units,that said they were as reliable as anything on the market but for me I would fall asleep driving one.But there were H trans in some two strokes in the latter seventy's ,lets have a pic of the inners of that machines muffler location etc it would give me a better idea.NCT

i am real new to these as well.. i just picked up a 78' 6x6 looks identical..my trans says 4022 H had a 2 stroke kohler in it! I wish i could help more..but i am kinda looking for some info as well!

My 70 has round headlite bezels & i seen 78 or 79 used the square ones like on yours. On the earily 70's they used a single chain & sprocket on the drive/brake discs to drive the main jack shafts. If it's a K3992T motor the year is cast stamped on the underside of the heads but you'd have to remove them to see it.

Hey fish yea that 78 you got has it got the 11/4 five bolt axles,which it probably has was near the last two strokes they made probably had a 440 2ams motor they were a blast had one miss it tons.NCT

My best guess on that is it was a 2 stroker judging by the exhaust box,more than likely a 440 Kohler and the machine would be a late seventy,s.NCT

yeah it "had" the 2ams motor, and does have them axles..i wish the motor was runnable i love 2 stroke. so instead i have a 13hp diesel im workin on installing..bummer is im sure it wont be as fast but should haul the shanty rather well!

If you really want a 2 stroker keep your eyes peeled for a $100 snowmobile. I bought 2, a 71 panther, 71 puma both with Arctic cat T1A400's. The kohler 400 K3992t 440 were in the old john deere i think.

Thats too bad that Kohler worked well it was still built here in Ontario then in Mississauga,then the engine plant moved sate side,still a ton of them motors out there,Mercury trail twister used them with twin carbs they worked awesome,as jasonk says lots of old sleds around that are adaptable,wish I had my 2 stroke back for a toy.NCT

So I know this sounds thick, to you guys buy what model Argo is it ? Like a conquest ?
I didn't buy this machine, I swapped a small hand built car trailer for it !
