  • first time out on argos conquest and 6x6 both had minor issues please help ID them

    hello
well Bought 2 used argos and both ran good on a 10 mile hard run today
but i had a few issues that I dont know where to start looking

    1. 1998 conquest now 135 hrs climbing out of the river in some real nasty river mud i had trouble, only one side of the tires would spin at a time if i applied breaks to the side spinning the other side would then spin. at no time could i get both sides to spin at the same time. no clunking or odd noises.

    2. 1998 conqest if i hit big bump like HARD it would die then would not hardly run like it flooded or fouled plugs but would idle fine for 20 mins, apply throttle then die. then all the sudden after 20 min or so worked fine. im thinking carb rebuild?

    3. 2002 argo 6x6 not sure model but has 18 hp engine 300hrs when in once in reverse and once in high when put under EXTREAM load it made a growling /grinding/whine medium pitch.... sound almost like maybe a clutchs slip or axel spining in sproket but every think looks ok from what i can see again (no clunging or broken gear grinding) ???? belt maybe???

other than that they did stuff that was crazy no way could a 4 wheeler could follow.
any help would be great im new to AAtvs thanks

#1. Sounds like complaints that i have heard about the open differential Argo transmission.

#2. Sounds like a piece of crud floating around in the carb.

#3. Sounds like a slipping belt.

so #1 is normal? how do i correct, update or is that just the nature of the beast
      #3 buy new belt?

sounds like these are normal other than crud in carb

i would like to upgrade #1 if possible any solution?

I just checked belt edges are fraid. so would a new belt solve the problem or do i just adjust somthing?

i cant find a rebuild kit to buy its a 20 hp liquid cooled kawasaki anyone know where to buy? thanks for the help

The more time you spend with the Argo, the better you will become at driving it and being able to control both sides at once. It will just take some practice. That is just the normal for an Argo transmission.

For the belt, you should purchase a new one. For the engine you may just need to clean the carb. Pull it apart and see what's in there. Clean all of the ports and try it out.

Pertaining to number one, just ease the sticks back a fourth putting a little pressure on and off the driven side, this will send the drive back and fourth and at some time you'll get drive to both sides, this video of an Argo bigfoot in the mud is the best example I have seen of working the sticks to switch the drive. Watch how Mike works the sticks here.

You can also see how Rock Docter works the sticks in a lot of his videos.

I also agree #1 is normal, and experience will help you with that. Eventually you will be able to correct without thinking about it, and even anticipate it.

#2 might be a sticky float. When you hit hard, it makes the float slam up in the carb, cutting off you're fuel supply. Usually the engine recovers quickly, but it sounds like the needle might be sticking. Or, as mentioned, it might be a bit of crud in the float bowl that just happens to block your main jet on hard impacts.

            #3, buy a new belt.

You probably don't need a rebuild kit for the carb, just be carefull.
I posted a vid on the 20 hp Kawi here, but you might have to search for it. I don't know how to link it with an IPhone.

I agree with all above. the learning curb with these machines takes some time but the more you play/work with them the more fun you have. im teaching my 7 yr old how to drive and he loves it. good luck

Cleaned carb, new fuel filter and it is running great
Installed new belt on big foot and it has not made the noise since
I fooled around in the mud this weekend and it does much better if one side slips just applied breaks slightly on opposite side until both sides are spinning

                Thanks for all the help

I had the same carb issue you had, I was moose hunting and it was a pain going up hills or bouncing and have it cut out. My brother was with me in his max 4 and he had a nice little 12v air compressor with a hose and a plastic blower attachment. We just took the air filter off and the top of the carb off and blew out all the orfices. Took two times but then I was good to go. I have a brigs so I don't know if there is much difference between the kawi but I bet it is same concept. There was some pieces I think maybe part of the rubber hose in mine. I think I got it in there from when I added my electric fuel pump this summer. Also the belt swap will fix #3 problem for sure. I too had t,o learn to drive my Bigfoot, it helped watching Rock doctors videos! The other learning curve is learning to stay off the 4 wheeler trailed and make your own route. Once I did that I had a better ride and a lot more fun!
