I recently was greasing an outer bearing when the cork gasket gave way an grease came out through a tear. I just cleaned it up and spread some orange silicone gasket over it. Does seem a decent fix short of replacing the gasket?

Cork gasket tear?

I didn't even put silicone on mine. I do recommend greasing AFTER you use the machine. I mean RIGHT AFTER because the grease on the axles will be hot and will flow through better without the tendency to push out seals or cork. I have taken mine in deep water with 2 axles like this and haven't had any problems. I do, however, have a bilge pump installed so I am not too worried. I also recommend marine grease.

Long term, you could loosen the bolts and pull the Bearing cover off. Fix the gasket with silicone, and bolt the brng cover back on. LOOSLY tighten the bolts, let the silicone set up, then tighten the bolts up the rest of the way. Should be good to go for as long as that bearing lasts.
Some guys don't bother with the cork gaskets at all, just use silicone.

I uae straight silicone. I tighten nthe bolts and leave it overnight. I then pump in the grease to fill any air pockets. I've had no touble doing it that way. Once the silicone is hard there isn't much will push it out. I have very little water coming is. I've spent up to seven hrs floating down the river.
