  • Transmission problem

I am a new member from Canada. I have a 1985, 6 wheel argo, K model with a Kolher engine. I have a question re the transmission: the main shaft that drives the chain has snapped. I am in the process of removing the tranny, but am having a problem removing the clutch assembly. I have removed the snap ring and have sprayed lubricant and still not able to remove. Any suggestions. Also where can I purchase a new shaft, the tranny was working great at the time the shaft broke. wfsf@shaw.ca

There should be a bolt in the end of the clutch shaft. Remove the bolt, and the Clutch should just slide off. If I'm not mistaken, the snap-ring you have removed is for taking the clutch apart, after it has been removed from the shaft.

What were you doing to break the shaft??

My son was driving it? Do I need to say more. Thanks. I did remove the bolt, but it seems to be seized on the shaft. I understand there is a tool that you can screw in where the bolt was and then hammer it to free it up. Do you know anything about that.

I would try penetrating oil, it's keyed on the shaft.

Might want to hanging it by the clutch and spray the shaft down good with PB blaster. Put something soft under the trans so if it loosens up it will fall onto it (I'm talking of a couple inches) I read somewhere of someone doing this with success. It's worth a try if the trans is out already.

I used small wooden wedges on mine it didn't need much just enough to apply pressure and off it poped.

                Broken trans. shaft

                Hello Forsbloom,

Did you have any luck with your clutch, is she out yet??? As for the broken shaft, i got some original parts manual for Argo on hands, and this look like it's a small shaft to replace but a big job to reach it(depend on witch side he's broken).... If you need more info on your transmission let me know and i 'll scanned the pages you'll gonna need. Also when you gonna have your shaft in hand before going to an Argo dealer try to see a machine shop and ask the guy if he can duplicate your part and how much can it cost. After that call the dealer and compare the price. I have a sprocket changed on my axle for a LOT LOT cheaper at a machine shop ( 50$ instead of 110$+14%tx)... From witch part of Canada are you from??? I'm in Québec

                  transmission broken shaft

I am from Calgary, Alberta. I don't have the tranny out yet because the clutch assembly has to be romoved before I can pull out bolts that hold the tranny in. I have the complete Argo service manual. The shaft is broken outside the tranny on the passenger side, between the two sprockets from the chain drive. I am off to argo dealer today to see what suggestions they may have Thanks Wayne

                      Seized clutch assembly

Thanks for the help. I finally have the clutch assembly removed. I ended up cutting it off with a grinder, as it was totally seized on the shaft. I went to the Dealer, Cn argo in Calgary, and that was their suggestion. I will replace the clutch assembly, but will be sure to lubricate the shaft with some anti seize lubrication before installing new assembly. thanks again, Wayne
