  • Looking to purchase Argo Conquest: What would you pay? With pics..

    Argo Conquest 2.jpgArgo Conquest 3.jpgArgo Conquest.jpg

Its being sold as is. Not sure of the year. Includes the tracks. Hour meter reads 1149. I'm told the serial number is CB16143 does than mean anything?

Wondering what you would pay for such a machine given the amount of work it will need.

Thanks in advance to all that help

Edit: Just realized I should state that I am located in Barrie, Ontario Canada

    Thanks again

I think you should have a good look at the machine....There are a lot of things that pics cannot show.....

    1. what are bearings like
    2. what are chains like
    3. what are sprockets like
    4. overall condition of tub
    5. what it tranny like
    6. price other machines in area
    7. how many manhours are you willing to put into getting it ready
    8. are you capable of doing the work or do you need to have it done at a shop
    9. hours on engine

These are just some of the things that you should consider....

What price are they asking for the machine??? this can help other members with their 2 cents....
Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

I am willing to do the work myself. Currently have a couple honda atv's that I have done all the maintenance on. I guess the reason why I'm asking is the machine is about 3 hours away. As long as the tub isn't smashed which the owner says it isn't then I feel it can be salvaged. I'm thinking with the tracks a good price is around 1000 is that fair?

The parts manual for CB16143 is dated 5/99. The next manual, 10/99, starts with serial number CB16459.

          I'm gonna say it a '99.

            Thanks for the info JohnF!

It's newer than I thought, clearly this conquest has lived a rough life so far

As mentioned, there are a few things to check, but my first impression is that the missing gas cap is a huge "red flag". But, $1000 will not get much these days, and almost anything can be fixed if needed.
I would buy it for a grand, but be prepared to drop some more cash into it.

Thanks Rock Doctor for your opinion...I was thinking the same thing, its hard to find any argo's let alone a conquest for this cheap. It's a utility companies machine so you never know what you'll get

                  $200 for the engine
                  $200 for the transmission
                  $200 for the clutch set
$200 for the tracks (and hopefully extensions)
$783 for the hood (Okay, just kidding )
(These are just numbers that I think should be pretty easy to get assuming the parts are in decent enough order.)

If I had to make the case to my wife I would say it is a $1000 project with $4K-$5K budget to finish that if I had to part it out I could get most of my investment back. Project time is free.
Figure all new chain - refurb axles - perhaps tires - strip and paint - clean carb - clean heads - refurb clutches - all fluids - new battery - new fuel delivery
                  It's missing a control lever.
                  That's the minimum.
If you are looking for a project then it looks like a good start.
If I were looking for a conquest project, I would do it.

Me I would pay 500 to 800 tops absolute tops, that machine is going to take a ton of work and everything is a question mark, save your money and buy a runner, you could end up with more money in it then buying one that runs.Talk to Plotthound he is in your area with a good already to go 8 wheeler and I guarantee that you will end up with as much or more bucks and a pile of work and bashed knuckles to get that one decent.JMO N.C.T

Hmm, I dont mind a project it's what I am looking for. I guess I'll make the drive on Friday and take a look at it. I'm thinking if the tub, frame, transmission and motor are ok I'm going to pick it up. Most machines seem to need work on the axles, bearings, brakes anyway so I'm not much farther behind.

Do the tracks not add any value or are they pretty much a given when you purchase an argo?

No not a given but looking at the condition of the machine they could have their own issues, choose wisely my friend engine and most assured transmission issues gets expensive fast, side note the machine I spoke of earlier has tracks and top, just sayin.Good luck.N.C.T

If it was anywhere near me for that price I would buy it. It does not look all that bad from the outside but you never know on the inside.

My gut feeling is -- It's in rough shape. No gas cap and sitting outside for starters. lots of hours so i'm only guessing the tranny should be gone over, if not it will probably end up like mine did, (toast) $1600 later. chains and bearings , axle, braking system etc. Not trying to paint a gloomy picture here but just trying to be realistic. If this thing does't run and the seller is not willing to put the obvious work it needs into it, there is most likely a lot wrong with it. So go real low over the phone and see what kind of responce you get. still could be a fun project as long as the price is right. Good luck,

                            Mike

I think the tracks alone are worth $500 if they are not worn out.
                              ROPS looks factory too.
