For a basket case tranny - I'll throw out $100 usd. A guy could have $200 to $500 in parts to fix it up...

This is what I got into on my 2001 conquest MU trans; input shaft=$220.00, 2 splined out put shafts @ $54.00 ea, complete bearing and shim kit=$264.00. Its not hard to drop 600 bucks, but the peace of mind is priceless. I could have had the input shaft knurled where the bearing spun but where we go and what we do, well... here's a thought, " if you cant afford to do it right, what makes you think you can afford to do it over? " Hope this helps... // RR

Maybe I am looking in the wrong places but I was told $500 for the low gears. This is in addition to the other costs mentioned above. At those prices I am figuring I am not far from cost of a new one (especially if I can sell my used one for something) and I don't have to any work other than remove and reinstall the tranny.

I think you are going in the right direction to replace rather than rebuild, if you want to change the gearing also. That cost along with the other parts, whatever they may, be will be pushing the envelope of a new one. Besides, the clock will be at zero hrs on that component. Good luck and I dont think it would be hard to sell the take out unit.
