  • Honda engine in argo? Which model?

    Hi Guys,

I have a 99 Argo 6X6. The 16HP briggs that was in the machine threw a rod and destroyed the engine.

I have read a few threads on the Honda upgrade, and was wondering which model of engine works the best.

    Thanks for the Help!

Go big, the 24 H.P. motor is a great engine, it responds well to being tuned too.

Cant say I know much about Honda, pretty darn sure they would build Quality product, but Iam 100% with Noel on the fact that up the HP no doubt,Ive had a bunch of Argo,s and when the HP,s rose the machines performed much better, bigger is better.NCT

I don't think that engine would work because it has a tapered shaft. The clutches we use have a keyed shafting with threads in the end. I put a 23hp vanguard in my hustler 980 build. Small Engine Warehouse: 386447-0079 -

What size shaft do I require? The engine is at a machine shop so I can't measure it!

                Would a 1 1/8" shaft work? This Model has a 1 1/8x 3 3/4" shaft

Or I could go with the 20HP version which has a 1" shaft

I'd look at the clutch that came off the old engine, and match to that. New clutches can be expensive and if the old works fine, that's what I would stick with. I'm betting the old B&S was a 1" shaft. So look for 1" shaft, keyed and threads.

You could also just get a new clutch to fit the Small Engine Warehouse: GX670TDW - Honda engine 24hp Horizontal 1-1/8" Keyed Shaft, Remote Throttle. A new 1-1/8" clutch is expensive. 302469A - 1195 Series Drive Clutch for Recreatives Ind Max ATVs | ATV Parts | MFG Supply has them for $450

An alternative would be to take the Honda with the 1-1/8 shaft to a machine shop, and have them turn the shaft down, cost in my area would be $100-$150 in Dallas, Tx., of course that might vary where you live.

I know some other forum members have used grinders to reduce the shaft size, I'm not crazy about that technique, but it does work.
