Can anyone tell me what year my old 8x8 argo is?

Hey Everyone,

I am new to this Forum. What a helpful resource! I recently purchased an older Argo from a guy who didn't know much about it..he acquired it in a trade. The entire engine has been painted making any year identification very hard for me. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. The only numbers/letters on the entire vehicle are on the transmission which says, "10674 cgk" and the brake calipers say "Grimeca". I have attached some pictures of it. Thanks for any help!!!

Best guess on my part would be mid eighty,s if we new what hp the engine is could get closer,17hp green Kohler pre 88,18hp red Kohler newer.NCT

Thanks for the reply! I was told it has the 18hp kohler and after scratching the black paint on the transmission there appears to be an orange or red color underneath.

Then probably 88 or newer,the reason I say this is in 85 or six cant remember I bought a 8 IC had a 17 hp Kohler with pinned sprockets,traded it in 88 for a 18 hp Magnum with the splined axles,and it looks like splined axles in your unit and the red motor tells me 88 and later.NCT

Looks like a nice clean argo but the guys that had it before you made some modes to this argo the intake is not right there should be a air filter,not a hose on the intake for the carb and the fact that it has hidrolick brakes means that it post 88 as long as they did not update the brakes.Nice argo cheers

Thanks for the insight. The hose on the intake is a bit strange...it leads to an crappy rigged air filter. I wonder if I could get an air filter that would fit right on that carb. For as old as it is, it still runs like a scared rabbit. I paid $2000 for it, you think that's fair? I really appreciate all the help and comments.

Thats a fair price,the original air cleaner you should be able to pick up used,that series of motor was used in lawnmowers if you can find a lawnmower wrecking yard someone who has lots of stuff you will find one.N.C.T

The remote Air Filter might not be a bad idea, maybe try to get a good filter that will mount to the remote hose. Reason: The engine compartment gets hot, especially on warm days, or when hauling heavy loads. Personally, I have not tried going remote with my Air Filters, but I HAVE blocked off the warm air intakes to my carbs. I believe it makes a difference.

No the models were 8 IC (industrial/commercial) or 8 Magnum back then.NCT

Is there anyway of determining between a 8IC an a Magnum?

This should probably go on a new thread but, is it normal not to have a hand break? I cannot find one on my argo anywhere...If not, is there an easy way to add one? Right now i just have a wedge shaped block of wood to stick behind the steering sticks.

Are the axles splined or do the sprockets have pins in them? The steering levers should have 2 adjustable stops on the bottom to hold them back with the brakes applied. Not a real good system, a wedge of wood is more dependable.
