  • Pulling to the Left

Well guys, I have read a few post on here and have tried measuring the tires to make sure they are all equal sized, making sure my idler chain are equal and proper tension and making sure I don't have a brake dragging. I spent the last week working on my 2003 conquest, however I still can't shake this problem.

Whats got me really worried is I took it out for a swim last night and the left side seems to spin faster in the water than the right side. Am I looking at a transmission issue?
I'll be buying a better jack today so I can try to see the speed of both sides, out of the water.

Has the right brake rotor or the left idler sprocket ever been changed out?

Pulling left on land and right in the water is wierd, but it could come down to weight distribution. In the water your body weigh will tip the machine down on the right. That will make the tires on the left swimm better, causing you to turn right.

Put an extra pound in the tires on the left side, see what that does. jacking the machine up and measuring the tire speeds will not work, all it takes is a tight chain, or bearings with more grease to slightly change the load on one side. It is possible that you might have a trans issue, but I would not go looking for trouble in there yet.
All things being equil on my Conquest, it pulls to the right, but I sit on the right side of the machine.

Ill give it some extra pressure in the tires tonight and see what happens and give you a report.

If you have a temp gun maybe you could measure the rotors and see if one is dragging some.

i would also check your sprockets someone could have changed one and thought they had the right one but it may be one tooth bigger or smaller giving you a different gear ratio on one side

I had a similar issue on my Bigfoot. After I changed my idler chains and rebuilt my brakes it is much better. I will say it still tends to wonder to the right but I attribute that to weight distribution like rock doctor says.

Set it up on blocks so all tires are off the ground and spin both sides by hand. If they feel the same you likely don't have anything to worry about in the drivetrain. To make it run straight inflate the tires on the side that it is pulling to. That will make them bigger and it should drive straight. One of the low pressure 0-15 psi guages are good for getting the tires all even.

If one feels like it is dragging then start lookig at the brakes, then the chains and lastly the bearings. Wiggle each tire and see if you have any sloppy bearings. Hopfully it will be obvious where the problem is.
