I basically knew very little about the detailed workings of Argos, so seeing that I couldn't justify a new one I decided to get a used one no older than 2000. I got this one for $1200 with the intent of replacing everything except the motor and tranny. I wanted the assurance that a bearing, chain, wire, or whatever would not leave me in a bind miles away from civilization PLUS I wanted the knowledge of how to troubleshoot problems by learning the ins and outs of the unit. This lead me down the irreversible trail of a complete teardown...whew, there is a lot of parts on one of these! My photo abilities are much to be desired, but I will post a few to show how far I had to go to fix a hole in the bottom of the unit and replace ALL bearings, chains, axels, seals. Will post more later.AR

Looks like a great project, AR. I stripped my '77 Argo completely down like you have. When it's back together you will be more than familiar with every nut and bolt.
The are a lot of parts, but I like how the majority of the work can be done with common tools.
Good luck with your rebuild.

That's awesome, you will learn lots about your machine. Looking good.
I've been thinking about starting my next project Conquest soon, so if you come up with any neat ideas, please feel free to share.
Running remote grease lines to bearings is a fine idea.
Keep this thread going, it should be a good one :-)

Im redoing my 98 conquest as well. Its almost completly stripped like yours. I am actually doing a "grease zerk " junction.... I will have 20 fittings right behind the front seat. I figure when I am done a ride and the bearings are nice and warm I will give them a good greasing and it will flow nicely into the bearings. It will be great for the ones under the engine...

A/R, I see you have a collection of new parts on the bench. Are you doing any of the updates such as HDI outer axle bearings or the HDI axle shafts? I see you had to get rude with a couple of items there. Quite a few of the 6x6 members here have done various modifications and improvements to this same type of machine and turned an already capable machine into an awesome one. I'm sure you've done your research though, and by the looks of the project at this stage, now would be the time to not only fix it but improve it. Good luck and have fun. RR

My Dad is coming in this year (66 yrs young) and I told him I would have it going by then. I really need to get it running so I can learn it's capabilities and limits. I started this thread with some pictures I took about two weeks ago, here are some more recent ones I took last weekend. Seats should be done on Thursday. I have more pics but will send them in a day or so, my connection is really bad today. I wish I had some neat little tricks to share, but it's just keep plugging away and it always works out.AR

Hey RD, they would have aired that show on HBO to handle all the swearing! For some reason I couldn't upload my final photos.
I think my connection is pretty bad today so I will try again later this weekend. Took the beast for a spin last night, what a feeling of accomplishment!
I will be heading out to the elk/moose camp later today to give the old girl it's first test, definately bringing the shop tools to retighten chains etc. I will be cruising around with two fellow argonuts so I hope I don't embarass myself. I dont have a video camera, but will try to snap a few stills to show the terrain we like to play in.AR
