I was just curious, does anyone know how long of a shaft on an outboard motor do you need if you want to put it on an Argo.

hi evil, most everybody say a long shaft is needed ie: 20 In the Argo videos, I see the short shaft (15") air cooled Briggs being used but the driver is sitting in the rear of his 8 wheeler. I don't know why nobody else is using an aluminum "swing down" motor mount but I have mine made and mounted but we are pretty much iced in!!!! You rode behind me some at the Ledges. Good Luck
I know this is a late entry. I have 9.9 4 stroke on a 8x8x avenger and i have sail boat long shaft motor. The short shaft cavitated and did not push well. The ong shaft works great.

I would imagine it would work but it would make it difficult to operate the controls on the motor.
When this wired long winter gets out of the way I have a few experiments I want to try on the water.
Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

Hi Lewis-I agree. The prop in the water works and the prop sucking even a bit of air doesn't. My problem is twofold;
! can you tilt the engine up far enough to climb out or up a fairly steep bank?
2. After you get across the body of water can you drive normally through the trails or do you carry the outboard inside the Avenger? hanks for your help

I have no problem getting in/out of water with inclines.
This pic shows me going up a decent hill/beach with my outboard at full tilt. As for driving on a bumpy trail... you'll want to build a support that uses the hitch receiver. (hopefully in my near future)

I have no problem with getting in or out of the water with a incline. The 9.9 is a bit heavy.(around 80 lbs.) I am looking to support my motor by adding an additional brace utilizing the hitch reciever. A 7hp long shaft probably would have done just as well as the 9.9. The 4 stokes are heavier but run quiet and are very effecient. If the exit is not ruff i do not even tilt it. I only use the outboard when this is what i have planned for that day. Water sport fun.
Trail riding is a different note. I would not recommend trailing with the motor hung off the back. The 9.9 may get wiped off the back and it was around $1500. Weight and swing of rear-end in narrow spaces is something i am not up to trying. Something i am looking at as a possibility is a high trust trolling motor to use while i am in the woods. I have one and i just need to configure it so i can deploy it when needed for the short runs. Don't know if anyone has tried it before but my guess is that they have.

I have an older Argo so Argo sells this wood transom that carriage bolts into the rear middle of the body (Argo Part # 617-00)
I modified the “Body Support Brace” on the transom when I fist put it in because I thought it was bit of a week design. I lengthened the support brace as wide and as high as it could go without being seen under the lip . I also added large outer diameter flange washers and used acorn nuts so the bolts did not stick out.
So I do not get much body deflection but I could probably mount a 35 hp (2 stroke) engine on it now
