  • Alright Argo Guys Need Help.

After driving around this past weekend for a couple of hours I noticed some metal filings in the motor compartment. The were coming off the driven clutch. The clutch is touching the bolt that holds the top spocket on to the transmission. I took the firewall off and drove it around some more but could not get the clutch to open up that far agian. Whats going on here?

OK I'm stupid, but I sure can't picture what you are saying! Take a pic of the area you are talking about!

Ok I will have to later today when I get up. But the driven clutch is in two halves. The inside half some how got against the bolt that holds the top sprocket on the transmission, the one for the drive chain. I don’t know how they touched either but both have new wear marks on them.

I have a '97 and just went out for a look. Is the wear spot on the very outer edge of the pully half? That trans sprocket bolt almost looks like it'd clear the pully, on mine. A couple things to check.. there's a snap ring behind the cammed hub that runs against the pulley half. Also there are "plastic" tips on the high points of the cam on the pulley half. Those are two things I can think of that'd cause what you're describing. If you have that aluminum cover over the driven clutch I'd take it off and hang it on the wall. Roll the belt off, pull the bolt out of the center of the clutch, and if not stuck on the trans shaft will slide off. If stuck use penetrating oil. With the clutch off, the two bolts that hold that aluminum cover are easy to get to.

Are the engine mounts tight ? Maybe the whole thing is moving around ?
I don't have a clue what you are talking about since I don't own an Argo yet.

With the firewall off and looking up between the clutch and the trans, the clutch hub is about an 1/8" or less away from the brake rotor in the center, on the outside as it tapers away, it's about a 1/4" from the rotor. I have 2 shim washers on the trans shaft to space the clutch outward, alignment shims I assume to align with engine clutch.

I put a pointer where the contact is. You can see the one on the clutch real easy but I could not make the end of the bolt show up.

The pic looks like the spring or it's anchor holes broke.

Ok just went and fired it up and watched it again. I figured it out. The bolt that holds that sprocket has backed itself out about an inch. Wow just dodged that explosion that would have torn a lot of stuff up. Got it back tight now and everything looks a okay. Also put a new drive belt on it and man what a difference that made. Thanks yall for your input. Im sure I will need it again seeing how I have never owned one of hese machines before but Im hooked.
