  • Breaks getting to hot

    Here is my problem I have Mechanical breaks on my old 85 argo, on the first time I had it out I could run for about 30 min till they get hot and are a pain to get to work. any idea how to prevent this here is what I am working with I have a kohler 21 hp and the standard vents on the sides. I dont want to go cutting holes untill I talk to the experts.

    Sounds like you need to go down to wally world (walmart) to get a billage pump (very small 12 volt fan) and some flexable tubing to direct air at your breaks. Who put the 21 Kohler in there? was that stock?

      Nope stock was a 18 hp tecumseh. I picked the kohler up for 200.00 brand new a buddie of mine test them for MTD puts about 30 min on them and then is told to toss them. did not take much to fit it in. Should the fan be blowing out or blowing air in, would it help to get some of the hot air the engine is causing out of the compartment?

          run with the hood off. that will help keep it cool.

            Install a bilge blower and some duct work to force airflow on your brakes.

                Are you making "sweeping" turns with the machine? Argo needs to make a series of small "jerks",so to speak,to turn. The owners manual for my conquest speaks of this.If one is bearing down on one lat thru the entire turn,the system is going to heat up.

                  Check out my members gallery I posted a few pictures on how I solved this issue , My only suggestion is if I ever had to replace or do over again I would get the largest air capacity bilge blower I could run , I did order and install the brake vent to make things easier to get both disks cooled...

                    Here is a quote from an Argo operators manual;

                    "The proper way to make a wide turn is illustrated in Figure 4-2. Make a
                    series of short turns. Hold the steering lever against the dash
                    between turns. Riding the brakes while making turns will result
                    in excessive heat, brake fade and lead to premature brake
                    wear."
