  • What type of trailer do you use to transport your ARGO 8X8?

Well.......I pulled the trigger last night on the ARGO Conquest from my neighbor. Now I need to get the new set of tires sorted out, and apply some personalized touches. The next question is what trailer to use.

The man I bought this from purchased a utility trailer to haul it on, only to find out that he couldn't get the ARGO into his garage while it was setting on the trailer. He had to put the ARGO in the garage and store the trailer in the driveway or in his back yard. Neither is a good option for me (neighborhood association rules, etc.).

So, I was wondering if any of you fine fellows know of a trailer that could be lowered to get the ARGO in my garage while still on the trailer, then when pulled out of the garage could be raised up for towing purposes. Sort of an articulated trailer. Does anything like this exist? What ideas have you come up with? Thanks!

PS - I'll post pics of the ARGO when I get it home and in presentable condition. This is gonna be fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Smaller wheels for putting it in the garage? Let the air out of the tires? Might be simple solutions.

HOA suck, I'd just move to a better neighborhood. But if that is not your best answer, maybe a trailer with those tiny pontoon trailer tires and a torsion suspension?

Buggyman made a pretty sick little trailer out of a car tow dolley. If anything is low enough to do it his set up is.

Hey Jim you want to chime in.

          Well, I use this

          I have to ask:
How low is your Garage Door? Is it because you have a top on the Argo that makes it to high to fit?

Old Holiday Trailers are great start for making utility trailers, they are usually pretty low.

This started out as a slightly used(OK, messed up) tow dolly. I just couldn't turn it down for $150. I pulled off the pivot plate, made some extension rails and a floor pan. Replaced the lights, added the spare, and it works great. As with any solid axle trailer, the machine on it absorbs the bounce from the road. I just have to be careful with how I strap it on.IMG_0065.jpgIMG_0066.jpg Did I mention....No ramps needed

I can carry the Bazooo in the back of my shortbox pickup with a platform that raises it enough to close the gate.

WOW Buggyman! That's a much more elegant solution to my problem. I think that would work. How high is it from the ground to the trailer bed? If I can get that measurement from you I can add that to the height of my Conquest (with the hardtop on it) and see if that would work. I would likely have never thought of that. I can probably find an old tow dolly like you did (or just the axle assembly) and build it from there. BBJ

It could be built pretty easily from scratch. The axle (side to side bar) and the tow bar are 3"X3" square tubing. I would assume 1/4" thick. This is kindof overkill for an amphib. I would go with 2"X2" or 2 1/2" and 3/16" thick for the "T" and lighten the materials for the rails. The top of the trailer is 7" off the ground, giving 4" of clearance.
If you go to a local salvage yard, look for an early 90's chrysler minivan(I think 85-95 work) and get the rear hubs and stub axles. The stubs are bolt on with a flat back and the hubs have generic tapered bearings. The whole rear axle might work for you too....take a look at it. There are 2 different wheel bolt patterns, I prefer the larger, and GM wheels use the same 2 paterns so wheels are easy to find. Remember that tire size will affect height, and weight capacity of the trailer....don't get tires as an afterthought.
Good luck, and post up some pics when you are done.
