  • Superchief Jetting

Finally got two and a half moments to myself and got at the SC carb which was in dire need of a cleaning and rebuild, the choke plunger bottom seal was so hard that it was letting fuel by which was a good thing because the main jet was nearly plugged, and the pilot jet well we wont go there,so a good dunking and clean up I have a new needle and seat and choke plunger and all assorted gaskets etc,but the main jet and pilot jet are in such poor condition that my old garbaged eyes can not get numbers off of them, and I want to jet this machine up a bit to compensate for the ethanol fuels we have here,so my question what was stock jetting on a Superchief.Cheers NCT

I know this probably has been asked before but Iam having a hard time finding specs with a great deal of difficulty in searching old posts I see that 185 seems to be the main, fine but I cannot find the number of the pilot which on the original I have its jus not there anymore,is there no one that knows what stock was?NCT

      this is only a suggestion,
when i rejet a carb if im going up or down in size i bie the next two or three sizes up or down depending if im going for rich or lean .
i run the motor and check the plug untill i get a nice dry almost powdery tan look to the plug. your at a perfict air fuel mix at this point. as fare as the jet if nobody has an idea of size take the jet to a bike shop and ask them to match it up as close as possible so you have a gauge to start your sizing from.

      hope this helps....
whats a four stroke ? you mean they make low h.p. motors that dont smoke ? who wants that ????
like Henry FORD iv always got a better way

Why not add octane boost to the fuel?
Is the issue driveability or better performance?
Now that you cleaned the carb and found crud inside it should be much better.
I always add stabilizer to the crappy ethanol blended fuel they are selling us at the pumps because ive had issues with separation when the fuel sits for a couple weeks.
And fuel filter changes are more frequent as they plug up with slimey goo.
On a carb with a bowl and float the separation can occur in the bowl and cause hard starting and poor performance.
I drain the tank and run it till it dies if its going to sit idle for any length of time.

if he cant make out the numbers on the needle or seat i would have to say its due for a total rebuild or (past due) i havent seen one so bad that i couldent even make the #s out on. sounds like some real crap fuel or alot of water for a long time.

Its the pilot jet number not needle and seat which at the best of times is hard to see this jet looks like somebody had taken a wire brush to it at some point even under magnifying glass nothing, and understand it was sitting for awhile,I have went ahead and ordered a 30 and 35 pilot so we will see,the reason for a rejet is the use of ethanol fuels which contain more oxygen so the stock jetting is on the lean side.Cheers
