  • Engine options

I just started the tear down on my st/300/d, and I was curious what is the best engine option for it other than the stock one. I live in a pain in the a&$ neighborhood and I don't want to annoy everybody with the two stroke. Although part of me wants to. Any suggestions, it will be used primarily by my kids, so I don't need anything too crazy. Thanks.

A variant of the ST/300/D body style was the 208TT, which used an 8hp Briggs single cylinder engine. If your goal is to have something that's quiet, good for the kids and really quite easy to service that might be an option. With some modifications, it might fit under the stock engine cover, too; I can't be too sure. You'll need to have a different (four stroke-calibrated) drive clutch on the engine, but you MIGHT be able to get away keeping the driven clutch the same on the transmission. The drivens on the old straight shafts are a bit more of a pain to swap out than on the later T-20s (just a single bolt). I've used two stroke driven clutches on a couple machines in the past, and although they're not exactly ideal, they'll work. It's basically just a spring-swap out in the clutch to change between the two, but finding the right spring or replacing the whole clutch might be an issue from a sourcing standpoint.

The other option is to keep a two stroke engine in it but if your goal is to be more silent, it might be a tough stretch. If you really want to minimize fabrication time (engine mount, exhaust routing, etc.) a nice small Briggs or other single cylinder engine (small Kohler Command, maybe?) might be the simplest route.

    Good luck!

Thanks, would a really good muffler work for the two stroke? I will look into the engines as well.

A really good muffler would help to quiet it down, but I doubt you'll ever get it down to a small four-stroke engine noise level. I mean.....if that's important to you. Exhaust design and configuration is far more important on a two. You might be able to quiet it down to a whisper, but the performance might be leaps and bounds off from what it should be. Does the old JLO not run?

I haven't started it yet, it appears to be gone through. The carb will need rebuilt, but I'm hoping it goes. I got the whole thing for $100. I have not heard one run for awhile, I forget how loud they are.
