What is this material?

Hey yall,

I wanted to see if anyone can identify this material.

It was used on my st300d to wrap the exhaust and keep the plastic body from melting.

It was sandwiched between two metal plates.

What is it and Is there any better way to insulate this?

I don't know if there's anything *other* than asbestos in it, but it's a major ingredient. You can use something like turbo-wrap, muffler-wrap, exhaust manifold blanket material. It comes in wider widths than the typical 2" stuff for wrapping around headers.

You can also get ceramic fiber insulation (one brand is Kaowool) from a place that sells stuff for kilns or forges. Is available as sheets about 1/8" thick, blankets up to 2" thick, as well as rigid boards. Takes heat like crazy and no asbestos. It will dull the scissors you use to cut it pretty quick and the broken fibers pierce the skin and stay for days.

Is it safe to have in my house?

Wear a mask and disposable suit. Wet the material down to keep the fibers out of the air and then cut it off. Dispose of the material and your suit accordingly.
