Some of the bolts and frame holes that hold the outer bearing flange to the frame are stripped out. I used some nuts on the inside to keep them tight, but I've never been happy with the small 1/4" bolts and have been thinking of drilling and tapping to 5/16. Any one done this, any reason not to?

I went for it, drilled them out and tapped for 5/16 24 fine thread bolts. Looks good, we'll see how it holds up. -
How did that work out? I'm just about to tackle the flange bearings on a Wild Wolf and think I may do the same.-Dave

I can't speak to it's strength since I haven't gotten it running yet, but drilling and tapping was easy enough and I can't see any downside to having a larger bolt. Plus you can use a long enough bolt to put a nut on the inside as well if necessary.Comment

You can make a flange to hold the nuts on the inside so you dont have to hold a wrench on inside while turning the outside. My first gens have the clips with the nut so it stays put, not sure how yours are. You could also weld the nut on the inside of frame too. Either way its nice the next time you have to remove an axle.
I think it is interesting you guys both bought your machine from the Mike C.

flange bolts
Larry, thats a good idea making replaceable flanges with the nuts welded on. I had given that some thought too. The to-do list never seems to reflect that you need six of everything, does it?
On the technical side, the 1/4" bolts are probably plenty strong enough, but if you have everything apart anyway, and replacing all of the hardware, you might as well upgrade. I will admit, I am giving some thought to a 1-1/4" axle conversion. I am afraid to ask about the cost, though.....
I didn't know hydromike sold JRP his Attex also, judging by Mikes collection you would never know that a couple were missing!!

A few of my 1/4" bolts were bent, some were broken, some were stripped. Mike must be hard on those flange bolts
I'd say they are not strong enough.Comment
