just finished getting bearings all in motor running fine, 399 JLO 2 stroke runs like a champ now. all new tire all the way around, Now I have some questions about the transmission. I can see its a borg warner T20, Do you push the sticks forward to turn? or pull back to turn? I have it up on blocks, and it appears to stop the right wheels if I push the right stick forward, and vice versa, and there is no reverse, so it looks like i may be pulling it out after all. where do I find parts for the Borg Warner T20?
with my explanation of the sticks, does that mean the bands are shot?

hey bother im a attex specialist you got everthing going ass backwards not insulting ya buddy feel free to talk pushing the sticks forward is fo forward drive pulling back on the left stick is to brake the left side to turn left right side pull back to turn right both back full stop and there is a reverse mode but in reverse then everything is totally opposite driving in reverse is tricky patrs can be gotten at richards 6x6 site or they can rebuild the t-20 for ya hismechanic is top notch i have had 400chiefs and super chiefs my whole life john

It sounds like the transmission is in reverse. The diamond shifters on top of the T20 are what shift the transmission from forward to reverse. Look at those and follow their linkage. You should have a shifter somewhere that operates them. If not, you can move them by hand to get it in forward.

mikes on the right track too....sometimes the internal gear that connects to the diamand shift plates gets stuck...just rock the machine abit forward or back abit and it will help the mechanism slide in place as ya push the shifter lever towards the rear to engage everse

also i reccumend getting the plunger setting tool from richards 6x6 it sets the travel plungers just right for braking and tavel play of engagements....which helps the bands''' release the tensioning to slide into reverse better

Thanks Mike and John, I knew something was wrong. I knew when I got it that the original owner had worked on this tranny. And it sat in a barn for over 12 years, before I got it.
So I decided to pull it out and crack it open, The first thing I noticed is that there is No thrust washers anywhere in it. None at all. Metal on metal. and they had put grease in it.
(bad I know) Type F tranny fluid. Has anyone heard of the Borg Warner T20 being put back together without thrust washers? All the gears and bearings however appear to be in good shape. Im debating on getting the belt relined, as it peels with my fingernail.

Some of the early T20s did not have thrust washers from the factory.

Thanks Mike. I was wondering. But I am going to have all 4 bands relined. They are wore and pulling apart with my fingernail. So I'd be good to reinstall everything without thrust washers it looks like. Thanks again.

Thanks for the info John, I've used AMS oil in the past, but have moved on To Red Line now in all my 2 Strokes, Those plunger setting tools you spoke of, from what I could tell from richards site, they are for the channel style T20s, mine is the popsickle stick design, not sure how they work either. Waiting On Bands to get relined now. and I think I'll replace the bottom Clevis plungers with the double o ring type as mine are the single. Top ones shouldnt matter too much. Thanks again.

Yeah John that is one bad A@* Machine. Mine is just an old Barn Find. Sat for over 12 years being used by cats as a litter box. Drove yesterday and picked up another T20, (Popsickle Stick) Same as my old one, but I really believe the bands are no good in this one also. Mike if you see this I've been reading your explanation on how the T20 works, and you describe it, as when you pull the Stick back, (right or left) that it "pulls" the bottom plunger out. My Attex is just the reverse of that. When I Pull either stick back, it pushes the bottom plungers in and pulls the top out. And my understanding of that is that the Top 2 Plungers are the Forward Left/Right and the Bottom are the Reverse Left/Right??
