    I have a 72 attex st 400 with a 18 horse four stroke in it it has a 1"3/16 belt width it keep jumping off so i put it on as tight as i could .worked real good for a while then shreded the belt .MY question is is this belt to wide should i be using a 1"or a 7/8" wide belt please someone help need a new belt just want to get the right one.

    Your engine isnt original so it is hard to say what clutch they used. I am not sure what size it is but If you look at your driven pulley on the trans. it shouldnt stick up out of the pulley or sink in to the pulley to far. The top edge of the belt should be near the outer edge of the pulley. That tells you what size the driven should use. For the drive clutch, if the belt is to wide it wont desingage. If it is too narrow then it will rev high before taking off. And also wont go completely through its travel at the higher range. One you figure that stuff out I found a site once (Think it was comet?) but it told what the circumferance/size of the belt need based on the pulley distance apart and the driven and drive clutch diameters. You could find that stuff out and get the right size.

      thanks larry for the help. Just talked to previous owner had the 2 stroke driven still on it and running a 8 hp clutch on the driver on a 18 hp motor. Im going with a 7/8 belt
