  • Need Help with axle bearing replacement

    I have a st300 attex with a few bad axle bearing, how do you replace them
    with out destroying and parts??? I need some expert advise.
    Please help!!!!! Greg

    The easy thing to do is look on the how to section their is an article on how to change axles and bearings on a max II attex is almost the same way. Unless you have the old attex that have the cast three bolt housing on the outsides. I do not Know where you are located but any bearing house can get bearings their a standard 1 inch sealed bearing once you get them apart they got the part number stamped in the back of them.hope this helps

      depending on the age and the way the machine has been treated, the axles can be miserable to remove. my sprocket tubes were bound to the axles from years of corrosion. i cut the axles out, then put them in a press. they poped out of the sprocket tubes at 4-6000 psi. needless to say, a slide hammer wasn't gonna do it.
      if the machine is running you can remove the bolts that go through the axle/ sprocket tube and take the machine for a drive... that might break them loose. other than that, it's just a matter of loosening the setscrews on the inner bearings, and the set screw on the ecentric collar on the outer. then with a hammer and punch, try to spin the ecentric collar on the axle. if it wont go one way try the other. once all that's done, they should slide out.

        When I got my 208tt it was in real bad shape. It sat outside a long time. My frame is shot and since swapped it out.... Look at my picture of it in gallery. So I dought it will be worse but . So anyways my problem was the inner bearings where seized to the axle. There where set screws. I had to grind them off with a cutoff wheel on the angle grinder. If you take off the 3 flange bolts on the outer and the 2 inners you can get the axle to slide out some so you can get a better grind on it. You can then pop the inner flange off the bearing so you dont ruin it. Unless you are replacing them also. Once the inners are off and the sprocket tubes, the axle will pull out. Surprisingly my sprocket tubes weren't to bad but they did take some beating to get them off. I ended up putting the hubs on to beat the axle out which also pulled the sprocket tubes off.
        The outer bearings are pressed on the axle and I have seen 2 ways the outer flanges are attached. One way was with a straight bore bearing and internal expanding rings and the other way is the insert bearing that come out when you spin the flange 90 degrees on the bearing style.

          Similar Problem

          To add to Jigerman's thread, how do you get the "Freeze Rings" off. I was blessed with the purchase of a machine that does not have those nice and easy snap rigs holding my bearings on. I have the old style 3 hole flanges and absent cutting the rings off I have noe idea how to remove them. My instruction manual says to pull them off hydrolically, but I cant see where you would be able to fit a puller as this ring is about 3/4 of an inch long and butts right up against the bearing. On the other side I have about 8 inches of axle to overcome. I have tried holding the flange and hitting the ground with the butt of the axle. No luck. I dont care about killing the bearing, but I dont want to have to find a new flange. Any advice?
          Famous last words: I swear honey... I am just going to change the tranny fluid. I won't tear this one apart...

            Can you take a picture of the style bearing you have? I have messed with 2 different styles of the 3 bolt flange on the first gen. attex. Both of them where pressed on the axle. One style had c clips that hold the bearing in the flange and another is the insert style bearing where you have to put the bearing in the flange at a 90 degree and then once it is in it will flatten out in the flange. You can't take the flange off of that one with the axle in the bearing. I haven't seen any where there is a c clip holding the bearing on the axle. Both of those are pressed on the axle and the outer side of the axle is slightly smaller then the inside. I have been able to take off and replace these bearing by putting the axle inside something so to hold it up by the flange. Making sure it is something to spread the whole surface area of the flange out on. Then put a socket or something on the axle side where the wheel hub would go to protect it and pound away. I did mushroom one axle out that I didn't protect but I was able to grind it off and it doesn't effect anything but extra work. It cant be mushroomed for the bearing to slide of.

              I have the style that does not have the c clips. I will try to get the axle off this weekend as you have advised. Once the axle is out is there any thin crazy I have to do to pull the bearing?

                To get the bearing out of the flange you just turn it in the flange. Not the same way the axle spins but other way. Hard to explain the direction, . I guess if you are looking at the flange and the bearing is spining left or right. You need to spin it to you or away from you inside the flange. Once it is 90 degrees inside the flange it should come out. You might need to stick the axle shaft in alittle to leverage the turn. Hope I helped.

                  Now what do I do.

                  Anyone out there have an axtra three bolt flange from a First Gen. I tried removing my axle with the old italian massager (mini sledge) and mine split in two. No I have an axle with the bearing still stuck on it and no flange. Anyone out there able to help?
