Project Attex

I am starting to do a teardown/rebuild of this attex.
I was tearing around yesterday and lost a axle bearing. Rather than do a repair, I have decided to do a more complete job. I am planning to pull the frame out and paint it, do some body pan repairs, replace axle bearings, seals and chains. So I will be busy for the next few months.

Sounds like your attex gets another chance of life!!! You wont regret it. Its nice having a machine you can rely on. Have fun with the rebuild!!!

I got some Acetone today. Acetone definitely softens the material, so I guess that makes it ABS?

Progress?

Thanks for the interest, guys.

I now have the ole girl tore apart. I posted pics in my gallery if interested.

The axles were tough to get out of the bearings and sprocket tubes, but since 3 of them were bent, and I plan to replace them anyway, I just cut them off with a sawzall and then pressed the sprocket tubes off. I plan to make new axles to fit some more standard ATV wheels and tires.

New bearings, axles, chains, wheels, tires, etc will be forthcoming as budget permits.
I plan to paint the frame, repair the body pan and install a hitch while it is apart.

I received lots of help and tips from members here and from the technical parts of this site.

Engine swap help?

Hi guys.
I am finally taking time to report some progress here. I got lots of help earlier and I appreciate it.

The axles, bearings, chain, wheels, tires are all installed. 6 new Carlisle Strykers are mounted and ready to spin! T20 Trans is gone over and installed. I used 3 wheeler hubs welded to new 1" axles and all new bearings.

Next is engine. I have a B&S twin 20hp setting here ready for install, but have some question on the clutch. The original JLO has a tapered shaft for the drive clutch, the B&S has 1" with key. I have some question about 4 stroke rpms compared to the JLO 2 stroke. Will the clutch work or is RPMs too low on the 4stroke? I can get an adapter sleeve made to put the clutch on if I am assured that it would work.

Sounds like you've made some serious progress. You will need a new drive clutch. The 2 stroke one will not work on the 4 stroke. There might be some go cart places that sell them, or you might be able to find one on ebay. I'm not 100% on what model you will need though. Is it a 1" diameter shaft on the engine. I know Comet makes a full line of clutches that work on our machines.

Frame paint

When you get ready to paint the frame Eastwood makes a very tough spray paint in a spray can or in gallon size if you have a spray gun. This paint is very durable i have used it on my 68 for engine compartment and frame. Just make sure you give it adequate drying time between coats. You can get it in gloss or semi-gloss.

Under hood paint will also work and is a little less expensive. I use the chassis paint.

This will make your machine stand out. They also have many other products that work well.

Crack repair is another issue, i use. IPS 4707 to fill holes and gouges. It is great for gluing ABS plastic which it is designed to do. This product can be filed once dried. Do some testing and you will get the hang of how to use it. I have a few pics on my gallery of its use. Also great for hole filling. Tape opposite side and fill hole. Sand and hole is filled.
Crack use drimmel tool grind out cracked area and fill with product. Sand and file down like body filler. This product dries chalky white as in the photos. Haven't tried paint on it yet but it should take primer and paint.

Seems like you are wanting to make this machine look nice and these are a few items i have found to help make a nice machine. Still working on mine. You may already know this info, but if you don't this may help.
