  • Need help with my first 6x6

I just bought an Attex 6x6. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I'm not sure what I have. It says ThunderChief on the side but I'm not sure what it really is. I think it is a 1971 model. There are 2 things that make me question what this is. The first is that the motor is a 252 JLO. I know that someone could have changed it. The second is that it does not have any gauges. I have read that the ThunderChief has gauges. Any Ideas?

My real problem is that I can't make the Motor run. I was hoping to replace it with either a used 2 stroke or an inexpensive 4 stroke. Either will need to have electric start. Is there a good source of used motors? I also was wondering if one of the inexpensive 4 strokes that can be bought for $300 - $400 Dollars would be enough power. Harbor Freight sells a 13 hp. Has anyone used a motor this small. I do not need a lot of speed.

Any ideas would be appreciated, John

I was hoping that the PowerMax would be a good choice due to the price. Will the clutch from my 252 JLO fit the PowerMax 16. Do you use the 6x6 Gas tank or just the tank that comes with the motor? Is it difficult to attach the throttle to the PowerMax?

          Thanks for the info, John

Congratulations on buying an Attex, John. It sounds like you may have a 252 Colt with Thunderchief stickers on it. A surer way to tell would be to check the wiring harness and if it wasn't wired for electric start from the factory, it was a Colt. The rear chain adjusters will be different on the Colt as well- they're mounted on U-bolts to a round frame member.

The 252 clutch won't fit many other engines- it's a 25mm taper. most four strokes you find will be a 1" or 1 1/8" straight shaft.

            Good luck on the project!

Do you know where I could get a clutch that will work with the PowerMax Motor? I guess it is a 1 inch shaft.

I looked for a wiring harness and all I found was the cable fron the 252 JLO running to under the dash.

Here are a few pictures. Is there anything in these that will help identify what is is?

One last thing. The person I bought it from said it had a T10 Transmission. Is that possible. All I hear about is the T20

                  That's a T20- I think the Borg/Warner T10 was used in GM cars & trucks.

You can find clutches on the net- through ebay or craigslist sometimes. It wouldn't hurt to put an ad in the "wanted" section of this site either. Generally the four-stroke clutches are in higher demand.

I'd say someone put the "Thunderchief" stickers on a Colt, but they also changed the nose piece. The chain adjusters look Colt to me, and the engine mounts look stock Attex, too.

'Looks like a nice project machine, John. Good luck with it.

                    Hey John,

It looks to me that you have yourself a pretty decent looking 252 Colt on your hands. It looks like someone slapped some home-grown Thunderchief stickers on there at some point, and painted the ol' girl green. There's some purty yellow plastic hiding under all that green paint. Borg Warner did make a T-10, but they were a 4-speed transmission that AMC used. Great transmission, but not very good in a skid-steer application. You have yourself a T-20 in that machine. I don't know what the Colt had as far as a wiring harness. I think they were a manual start-only machine, maybe with a key or kill switch? I don't know if they had a headlight switch as well. Don had a Colt; he may be the resident expert....

Good find! It'll be a fun project. Lots of folks here to help you along.

Thanks for all of the info. It looks like the search for a clutch begins. If anyone has one that will fit the PowerMax 16 motor, let me know.

                          Thanks again, John
