  • 440 Thunderchief

I just got a 440 Thunderchief. It appears to be in pretty good condition and has all the parts but i am really confused because the top fan belt wheel that goes to the generator does not spin with the main crankshaft? is this normal? Im not getting spark. I'm just going over the two carbs cause its been sitting for at least 20 years and figure they should be cleaned out. Tires seem to be pretty good and chains are not too bad. Anyone have any good tips for me? I really want to get this thing running!

Try removing the pull-starter. Either the belt is broken, loose or it's off the pully. You'll be able to see what going on when you get the recoil off. The belts are easy to find if you need a new one.

Nice find, Ross- the Thunderchief is a great machine. I agree with George as far as the fan goes, but for the ignition spark you may have to go further. There's an electric plug on the engine, usually under the carburetor somewhere. Unplug it and see if you have ignition that way. If you do, there's a problem with the wiring on the machine and if you still don't, it's the engine. It's always good to try a fresh set of spark plugs first, but I'd guess the points are oily, burnt, or just not opening. They're under the flywheel.

      Good luck!
